I forgot to mention: 

Disconnect gracefully

    Before disconnecting from an external display,
    make sure that windows and controls will be accessible on the 
    laptop display and disable output to the external display.

        Sometimes when an external display is disconnected before output
        to it is disabled, one gets stuck because something one needs,
        such as a shutdown control or screen control program, is not
        visible on the laptop's screen.
