Doesn't fedora use rpm and yum?
I might try stuff like this:
> yum list python
..
> yum install python2.6
(may fail if this package doesn't exist)
Find a python2.6 rpm and install that way.
If all of this fails, you may find Ubuntu/Debian package management
more to your liking.
