discuss the state of the art in technical and scientific computing with applied
examples illustrated using Mathematica's powerful environment.</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><FONT face=Arial size=3>Topics will include
numerical and symbolic computation, such as solving differential equations and
optimization problems, performing linear algebra with sparse matrices and
integrated data access and analysis. Additionally, modern techniques for
visualization, such as 2D and 3D graphics and stereo lithography, and dynamic
interactivity with computations and visualizations will be
demonstrated.</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><FONT face=Arial size=3>Finally, the
presentation will conclude with a brief look at the future directions of
technical computation.</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><FONT face=Arial size=3>Michael Pilat is a
senior software engineer at Wolfram Research, Inc., creators of Mathematica, and
has been with the company almost five years. He works on a variety of projects
throughout the company, from audio and video processing to data systems
architecture to analyzing web statistics. In addition to features for
Mathematica, he has worked on the WolframTones and Wolfram Demonstrations
Project websites, developing the functionality to process <?xml:namespace prefix
= st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place
w:st="on">MIDI</st1:place> music and Flash video in
Mathematica.</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"><FONT face=Arial size=3>He holds a BS in
Mathematics and Computer Science from the <st1:PlaceType
w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType> of <st1:PlaceName
w:st="on">Illinois</st1:PlaceName> at Urbana-Champaign, and a MS in Computer
Science from the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType
