You need a better mailer, one that lets you post to 'all' 'list only' and
'to the sender only'.
Your proposed solution works for you by absolutely breaking things for
those of us who already have mailers who work that way. It sets up
an absolute rule so that those of us who do reply to the sender end up
with what we sent, intended not for the list, out in the list.
The downside of sending something to one person when you meant to send
to the list is that you have to send it again. The downside of having
your list silently take your responses sent to the sender only and
broadcast them to the list can be spectacularly worse, especially when
your absolutely-meant-to-be-only-to-the-sender, and sent that way note
said:
'Why do you keep responding to this moron XXX (also on the list)? We
all know he is wrong, and that we will never convince him of this fact.
Stop wasting all of our valuable time by arguing with him. It only
encourages him, because he not arguing in order to reach some consensus.
He's arguing because it is fun.'
Notes like this, clearly sent to the sender only, should not by hijacked
by the list and posted to the whole list. People who have the ability to
discriminate should be free to do so, and people who do not have such freedom
should get a new mailer.
see http://www.unicom.com/pw/reply-to-harmful.html
but the above is from my personal experience.
