[Distutils] [issue104] bdist_egg ignoring egg_info:writers

It seems that creating eggs with bdist_egg does not read egg_info writers for extra files to be placed in EGG-INFO. Running setup.py egg_info first fixes the problem, but it seems like this step should not be necessary.
Am I mistaken, or is this a real bug?
