From brian at python.org Mon Feb 3 17:08:10 2014 From: brian at python.org (Brian Curtin) Date: Mon, 03 Feb 2014 16:08:10 -0000 Subject: [Python Edinburgh] PyCon 2014 - 400 tickets remain! Message-ID: Hi Edinburgh Python Users! PyCon 2014, taking place April 9-17 in Montreal, has just passed 1600 tickets sold, and we're seeing sales ramp up very quickly. Late last week we were announcing the 1500 mark, and with a cap of 2000 tickets, we expect these last four hundred to move quickly. Head to https://us.pycon.org/2014/registration/ to buy yours today! This year's talk schedule is available at https://us.pycon.org/2014/schedule/talks/, along with a keynote series including EFF co-founder John Perry Barlow; IPython creator, Fernando Perez; PSF director, Jessica McKellar; PSF chairman, Van Lindberg; and Python's creator, Guido van Rossum. The tutorial schedule is available at https://us.pycon.org/2014/schedule/tutorials/, and spaces are limited! You'd be hard pressed to find a better value than our tutorials. We've long thought PyCon to be family friendly, and last year's "Young Coder" tutorials were a hugely successful step towards showing it. The tutorials are back again this year, with registration opening shortly for children 12 and over: https://us.pycon.org/2014/events/letslearnpython/. For kids under 12, we're pleased to be offering childcare! See https://us.pycon.org/2014/childcare/ for details. The 5K Charity Fun Run is on its third year, with proceeds benefiting the EFF. It's a fun time and supports a good cause. For the 5K and many other events, check out the Events section on https://us.pycon.org/2014/ If you require an invitation letter in order acquire a travel visa, please email pycon-organizers at python.org! For the latest updates, follow us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/pycon, and on our blog at http://pycon.blogspot.com/ Hope to see you in Montreal! Was looking forward to attend but had an engagement. I moved to Edinburgh from Portugal last September and before that was part of the Python community there (in Porto), helping organize talks (work in progress) and part of the speaker pool (definitely a work in progress) and been meaning to get involved with the community here! -- Jos? The usual details apply - it's at Berts Bar [1] at 6:30pm. There will be a printout of the Python logo on the end of the table to help anyone new recognise us. There's no agenda, and no minimum skill level - everyone is welcome. Use it to chat about stuff you're interested in or ask questions about things you want to know more about. Mark PS: We use Google Calendar to publish events [2] such as this - you can subscribe to it or the RSS or ical feeds if you want better reminders than the ones I send out. As food for thought, something i've been wondering recently is creating an open source web alternative for a c/Profile visualization tool (processing and charting .prof dumps). There a few tools for that, some of which are not easy to install on OSX/Windows and a web alternative would allow for example collaboration: - http://alleyoop.sourceforge.net - http://www.open-works.net/projects/valkyrie.html - http://www.vrplumber.com/programming/runsnakerun/ Some of the features i'd like to see on this tool would be: - users and teams - ability to create "projects" to aggregate dumps - ability to associate machine hardware specs to dumps for context - ability to chart perf data across several dumps (time series / performance over time/multiple runs); others - ability to export (download) data as CSV and most importantly, an iPython notebook with static data in the first cell (for example) so that it could be custom manipulated (matplottlib, so on) or even pre-developed notebooks with charts already in place I've been gathering opinions from people (i admit not being an aggressive user of profiling) and feel free to reach me and comment today! 2014-02-25 9:48 GMT+00:00 Mark Smith : > Hi all, > > As I mentioned last week, the pub meetup is tonight - > > 6:30pm, Berts Bar - there'll be a printout of the Python logo on the end of > the table. > > Hope to see you there! > > --Mark > > _______________________________________________ > Edinburgh mailing list > Edinburgh at python.org > https://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/edinburgh > -- Jos?
