If it helps you in any way, I can give you the list of the documents I filed, just for reference. They don't publish a list of necessary documents at the VAC (as opposed to Schengen-zone embassies), just vague guidelines, which is stupid, because it makes it harder for you to collect them, plus makes it easier for them to refuse clearance by ignoring supplied evidence, etc, and then basically you're paying USD100 to input your fingerprints and other biometrics into some obscure database you have no influence on. But enough ranting, here's the list:

passport (international, of course)

photo

don't forget about the payment

printed application form and appointment confirmation

aviatickets (I bought them at WizzAir by bank transfer, so I just printed out an email and attached a copy of bank transfer order, платіжне доручення)

europython ticket (email printout)

europython invitation (received from John by paper mail)

europython invoice (also by paper mail, it had signature and seal)

for some reason they refused to accept medical insurance (as Schengen-zone requires)

I am self-employed, so my financial documents (the alleged reason for refusal, although I successfully received Schengen visa with the same documents) were as follows:

свідоцтво про реєстрацію суб'єкта підприємницької діяльності

податкові звіти за два попередні квартали

виписки з банківських рахунків за рік

One more thing - my friend (Alexey Popravka) filed for a visa last year as well, and was refused for a really ridiculous reason, so we notified John, he probably contacted the authorities about this, and VAC reviewed their decision towards Alexey.

But don't let those difficulties discourage you, I think you should try it anyway. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. Other than that, I highly recommend asking John Pinner for assistance.
