this might work: in PIL/BmpImagePlugin.py, change
if greyscale:
if colors == 2:
self.mode = "1"
else:
self.mode = rawmode = "L"
to
if greyscale:
if colors == 2:
self.mode = rawmode = "1" # <-- here!
else:
self.mode = rawmode = "L"
