That's how it ought to work. If it doesn't, one of two things is the case:

1) your mail client is broken. Mailman can't fix that.

2) your mail lists are setting Reply-To, and overriding the mail 
client. Don't set Reply-To.

I expect you'll see that extension at some point, but not for 2.0. 
I'd like to be able to set up a number of regex's, and for each one, 
define it as "hold", "reject", "discard", and for each (other than 
discard, of course), define an optional return message for them. It's 
on my list to do, as soon as I find time.
