Adam,

   Insightful answer. Ipython does do colors, and the ANSI codes are
definitely color related. Now the trick is to look through python-mode.el
and see if I can easily spot where ipython is called when C-c C-c is
pressed.

   However, since emacs uses syntax-specific colors, too, I wonder why
ipython doesn't display its colors in another emacs buffer.
