[python-win32] How to clear a "dead" icon from system tray?

I'm ending task on a process that has a system tray icon, which works but it leaves an icon behind
in the system tray, which only goes away if I mouse over it. Can anyone think of a way to force a
refresh of the system tray without mousing over it?

I know this is adding duct tape over duct tape, but the only way I've found to close this program
from Python is with an (automated) end task.
