I've tried a couple of ideas, but things just aren't working out. The
problem always gets sticky when trying to handle undo/redo operations
for the Layer 'added_child' and 'removed_child' messages. Presently
it looks like I'll revert most of the changes to the 'transfer.py'
file and make some simplifications to the restored code, but I'm still
not giving up on finding a better solution based on the new code.
