I've been working with GUSI2 a bit. I think I'm close on (a) - I should have
something that runs sometime next week.

Note under GUSI2's os.path.islink() considers mac alias files to be symlinks.
Currently it alway returns false.
I assume this isn't problem for anyone - mac specific code presumably
dosn't call
a function that always returns 0. But let me know if anyone sees a
problem with this.
