My two bits...
Although I do have Virex installed on my PowerBook, I also followed the
disable extensions convention, so I can't pinpoint Virex as the culprit.  I
did notice on Jack's MacPython page the mention that Virex on the iMac was
causing some installer problems, but it might be a good idea to simply
recommend disabling all extensions - per Andrew's suggestion.  It might also
be a good idea to mention disabling extensions in the installer Read Me and
other documentation.

I have also noticed other installers providing a notice at install time that
no other applications can be running during the install process.  I don't
know about building installers, or using Installer Lite as Just has for the
Mac Python installer, but that may also be a feature to consider building
into the next release.
