i'm in pretty much the same situation, but i still lurk and read and 
hope that one day my skills from books will catch up to the list.
you're correct, its hard to develop in a language without a full 
understanding, but i find it hard to get into something without a 
project to get me motivated.

i've found the tutorials at http://www.python.org to be really helpful 
and give me some goals to work toward aside from the o'reilly examples.

good luck. i'll be interested to see what the more experienced people 
on the list have to say. just wanted you to know you weren't alone in 
your struggle.
