Ah, no, this bit is untrue:-(

Where I got stuck was getting things to work in such a way that the new 
_Qt.so module (from 2.4, in /Library/Python/2.3) replaces the old 
_Qt.so (from 2.3, in $prefix/lib/python2.3/lib-dynload), but I haven't 
found a way yet to do it.
