Well, writable is wrongly spelt in English.  Spelled without the inner "e",
it should be pronounced with a short i, and would have something to do with
the modified object being able to have writs served upon it.  Oh, well.

[Our English heritage includes wild spelling changes (viz Chaucer versus the
present)...Shakespeare spelled his name many different ways, including at
least one instance of the rather far afield "Wilm Shaxby".]
