As you stated you were a newbie, I thought I'd make it clear -- there is 
no need to use IDLE to do Python. It's just one of many options. at a 
minimum, all you need is a text editor and the command line. An editor 
that has good Python support is best.. there are lots of those, as well 
as a number of other IDEs.

I'd pick one and get rolling with Python!

Also, Python 3 is indeed the latest and greatest, but it is not in very 
wide use yet, so you will encounter these frustrations. If you just want 
to get something done with Python, 2.6 may be a better bet at this point 
-- much of what you learn will be transferable.
