To manually register and unregister the binary release of spambayes, use
'bin\outlook_addin_register.exe" instead of addin.py - the same cmd-line
options should work though.

Try the following:
* Shutdown outlook
* Execute outlook_addin_register.exe without any args.
* Start Outlook
* Look in your %TEMP% directory for spambayes1.log (I  *think* that is the
filename - see the "troubleshooting guide") and mail the contents of that
file back to the list.  If that logfile can't be found, or shows no evidence
of spambayes being loaded at all, then you should get back to looking into
if Outlook has disabled all addins.

If the user is not an administrator of the machine, you may also like to try
installing it via an admin account.

  User managed to uninstall SpamBayes, leaving the toolbar in place (fixed
per your instructions).  When I tried to find the addin.py file (or close to
that) to run --unregister, couldn't find it.

  Flushed out every trace of SpamBayes I could find (with help from Google
searches):  c:\docs&settings\<user>\Application data;
c:\ProgramFiles\SpamBayes; searching on 'spambayes', 'bayes', & 'spam' in
registry; etc.  Still wouldn't install SpamBayes.

  Next I assumed that Outlook 2003 was broken (possible), and that it
wouldn't allow *any* COM add-ins.  So I downloaded and installed
AttachmentOptions.  It installed fine, and added its tab to the 'Tools' |
'Options' menu.

  When I run the SpamBayes installer, it runs fine to completion.  One odd
quirk, though:  It doesn't fill in the checkbox to 'register this plug-in
for all users.'

  How am I being stupid, and is it possible to correct it?

Love the product. I have two installations of it, one on a desktop with Win
XP Pro and another on a Sony laptop with XP Home both with Outlook. One
little glitch I am seeing, only on the laptop, is that the messages are not

We've recently installed a new server, running WS2003, and installed Office
2003 on here.  Spambayes was working fine on the former server with Office
2000.  Everytime I try to start outlook with the addin enabled, Outlook
crashes and restarts, I have to disable the addin to get Outlook to open.
What am I missing?

There area few spam protection packages out there, like McAfees one that are
so bloated and porky.

 

Then, conversely there are a few out there like spambully, and spambayes,
that are sleek and efficient. 

 

Spambully is good, but spambayes is opensource, and that's why it gets my
vote.

Help! I am using Outlook 2003, and I have had success before with SB version
1.0.4 (with Outlook 2000)...however, now when I click on the exe file to
install/run it, I get the messages that everything has been installed (all
the way to the "view html file"), but no wizard pops up when I open Outlook,
and there are no spambayes happy faces(!) on my toolbar. In fact, my email
program is not sorting the messages at all, yet everything has been done
correctly!

What am I missing?

Dear Spambayes help-group,

I've read the faq file and bug newsgroup, but was unable to find an answer:

The tray icon runs ok, but when I click on any of (review, view info, configure) the program does not respond.

I unistalled edition 1.04 and now run 1.1a3 from sourceforge.net.
This reinstall didn't solve the problem.

I can't access the review page either...

Help, check version (displays I have a newer version than available for download ;-) ) and exit do work.

I hope you know whats going on, so I can get it to work again.

OK, lets start with the basics.
First lets make sure we are both talking about the same thing.
Which instructions did you follow? Please describe them step by step, in
your own words, including any reaction of the computer.

Then perhaps someone can tell you where along the way it went wrong.

I find that Spambayes dies on me after a time - that is it stops working. It no longer transfers spam from my Outlook 2002 inbox to the Spam folder or Suspected Spam folder. 

Generally I uninstall and reinstall and it cures the problem but most recently when this happened reinstalling did no good.

I have checked that I am using the most recent version: 1.0.4

Should the 32 bit binary be unusable, you could always recompile from source.
The best way to find out, is to try it in a controlled environment.

Not at all likely.  SpamBayes only operates on incoming mail.  It doesn't
have anything to do with outgoing mail.

Spambayes is not my program and it is not my website. I didn't write it.
I'm just a user like you. Nothing more, nothing less.
You have sent your email to a mailing list where there are maybe
hundreds of people subscribed from all over the world. Some of them even
live in exotic places like Belgium, the capital of Brussels! ;-)

It's good to read that you have found the instructions for
Outlook/Outlook Express yourself. An often heard criticism on Spambayes
is that its website is not very obvious for non-techies. I'm a techie
myself so I live with it. But I can imagine it can be difficult for
others.

And by the way, last time I checked, I wasn't a Ms. or a Mrs. ;-)

PS: when you reply, please reply to the list, not to me personally. Or
at least put the list in CC.

died. Bad power supply took out the unprotected motherboard. I bought a
new PC that is preloaded with Vista.
*	Can I transfer my license to the new PC?
*	Will Spambayes work on Vista running Office 2003?

I'm not sure where you might have bought SpamBayes, since it's freely
available. Assuming you really do have SpamBayes, you may do pretty much
anything with the software. See

oes-it-cost-can-i-pay-anyway and
http://spambayes.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/spambayes/spambayes/LICE
NSE.txt. However, if you paid for a license to something else (or
something derived from SpamBayes), it may have more restrictive license
terms. You'd have to check with the supplier.
 
I don't know whether it will work with Vista. I'm under the impression
that a good deal of software does not. I don't have any trouble running
it with Outlook 2003, though.

Hello,We use Nortel Networks Call Pilot Which is an outlook add in that
pickup voice messages and faxes from the phone and allows us to access
them via email. After I installed SpamBayes 1.0.4 Add In for Outlook
(2003), We have the following problems.All messages in the CallPilot
change to "read", and the message waiting indicator on the phone turns
off. When a new voice message is left on the phone, an email is generated
with the message attachment, and immediatly the message is marked as read
and the message waiting indicator turns off. So we never know that there
are new messages. Once SpamBayes add in is uninstalled, everything works
as expected again.Is there a way to tell Spambayes not to scan particular
message folders or not to scan messages from a particular source? ThanksHemanth

Yes.
I don't use the Outlook add-in, but I'm sure you can configure which
folders to use.

No.
You could play with the Outlook built-in filters to move messages that
shouldn't be scanned to a separate folder.

And something else: I think that you can also configure the add-in not
to mark scanned messages as read.

As I understand it, the thing to do is to train on messages that contain
those words.  That is, if you receive a message that contains those
words and SpamBayes classifies it as spam or possible spam, tell
SpamBayes that it's actually ham.  Alternatively, you could probably
parse through the code to understand the database design and hack up
something to add some special tokens to the database.  Heck, you could
change the code itself to give special treatment to your whitelist
tokens.  The source is readily available.

I don't recommend any of the above, though.  If you somehow receive a
spam message with one of your whitelist words in it, the first approach
would require you to mislead SpamBayes about what you consider to be
spam, and the others seem very error-prone.

Lots of people have tried to find ways to make SpamBayes smarter.  As
near as I can tell, no one has found a way to make it consistently
perform better in a long time.  Does it matter that it's dumb if it
gives good results?

Ah.  Perhaps the thing to do is to build a starting database by training
on a corpus of ham and spam messages that you know your clients would
agree that you've classified correctly.  You can then install that
database on their machines when you install SpamBayes.  See

This is how I would do it:
1. Collect a few hundred ham messages AND a few hundred spam messages.
The best thing is to have about equal numbers of ham and spam.
2. Train these messages on one installation.
3. Install spambayes on the other clients
4. Copy the training database from the first installation to the other
clients.

Just a thought: it might be fun to have a page on the web site that

Subject: [Spambayes] spambayes binary 1.1a3 fails to install,
	Error 500 + database hangs

I was running the binary version 1.1a3 as proxy with outlook express on a Windows XP system.

however database seems corrupted, reinstalling failed, now when trying to save configuration following message appears:


any help is welcome. The previous version 1.04 used to work ok until 2 weeks ago (probably due toe installing Internet explorer 7.

I have begun getting this error message in Outlook when I create a new email
message.  It seems to have started approximately when I installed SpamBayes
and I'm trying to figure out if it is connected to the error or not.  I know
that the error has to do with new security measures, but I don't understand
why it just started appearing.  Does anyone else have this problem?

I think the most important question you have to ask yourself is, what
email client do you use? I think that the operating system is not
important. You forgot to tell which email client you use, but from the
headers of your email I learned that you use Microsoft Outlook version 12.

I have seen a lot of questions on this mailing list from people who ask if
spambayes works with Microsoft Outlook version X or Y, and most of the
time the answer is, "we don't know, just try it, and if it doesn't work
tell us what the problem is and we'll try to help you".
Since very few of these people come back to the mailing list to report
failures, one can only suppose that it works. The only unfortunate thing
is that most people don't come back to report success either.

So would you please be so kind to try Spambayes on your shiny new PC, and
send a small report of your experiences to the mailing list? That would be
a big help.

I had problems with outlook 2007, so I repaired it, and re-installed
SpamBayes, because that  didn't work after I repaired outlook. I am not
getting an error, but when I look to the com-add-ins, there is the error

van de COM-invoegtoepassing. (in English: not loaded. There is a
runtime-error occurred while loading the COM-add-in.)

spambayes will not cause that message.  I suggest you look for other
software you installed at rougly the same time (or if you got spambayes from
anywhere other than spambayes.org or sourceforge.net, you may have something
else entirely different (or in addition) to spambayes.

Hello

I have used Spambayes for about a year and think it is a really effective
program. However, as my anti-virus and firewall subscriptions were both
about to expire I did some research and decided to go for Zonealarm Internet
Security Suite. As this contains a spam filtering facility I have decided to
give it a try.

The problem I have is that I wish to uninstall Spambayes but it does not
show up in the Add/Remove Programs listing. As a compromise (as it is
possible I may want to use it again in the future) I disabled Spambayes from
the Manager but even though I uncheck it on the Outlook toolbar, if I close
and open Outlook it reappears. I don't have sufficient room on my toolbar
for the (large) ZoneAlarm buttons AND Spambayes so really do want to
uninstall it.

I am running Windows XP SP2, Outlook 2000 and the latest version of
Spambayes Version 1.0.4 (March 2005).

Please can you help?

It is very surprising it doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs - if you used
the installer it certainly should (and does for most people)

To remove it manually, close outlook, then open a command-prompt, change to
the "\Program Files\Spambayes\bin" directory and execute:

  outlook_addin_register.exe --unregister

Then manually remove the toolbar, as documented at
http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/faq.html#how-do-i-uninstall-the-plug-in.
After that, just remove the "\Program Files\Spambayes" folder.

I need guidance...

I've been using SpamBayes for a long time now and it works wonderfully.

I had been using 1.1a2 for a little more than a year, I think.  The training
was as perfect as you could get.  I was only seeing about 1.5% - 2% spam in
my Inbox.

In the last few days, I upgraded to 1.1a3 and added the PyDNS to snoop
through the URLs.  I didn't install the OCR part though because I was seeing
zero of the image spam already.  I am pretty sure that I got the PyDNS
installed properly, but I am not absolutely positive.  Everything seemed to
be working properly for a couple of days, but now when I start my system, my
little tray icon says that it is trying to start the service and then I get
the message that the service do not start in a timely manner.  I would
understand that as saying it timedout.  After that the try icon disappears
and my email program says that it cannot connect to the proxy.

Yes, I am using Outlook 2000 and I am using the proxy, I find it works
better than the plugin, but that's my opinion...

I am running Windows XP Professional, and Outlook 2000 SP3, Spambayes 1.1a3
and PyDNS 2.3.0.

Please point me in the right direction...

I am using Spambayes POP3 Proxy Version 1.0.4 (March 2005) with Outlook Express under Windows XP Service Pack 2.

It appears that Spambayes does not work under OUtlook Express. I can do training but have to remove Spam and block Spam senders by hand in Outlook Express.

No evidence can be seen that Spambayes by itself has automatically blocked Spam mail.

Please comment wether Spambayes can be used under Outlook Express.

Subject: [Spambayes] Spambayes stopped working

I have one computer that is having a problem using Spambayes. It seems
that when we highlight an email in the Inbox of Outlook 2003 and click
on Delete As Spam that nothing happens. I reinstalled Spambayes and it
did correct the problem. I then uninstalled it and rebooted and then
reinstalled, still nothing works.  Any suggestions on how to get
Spambayes to work again?

I was using spambayes for several years with really good result and not 
long ago I saw an add-ons for Thunderbird "ThunderBayes".

This add-ons could help me better train my mail.

The problem is:
This add-ons need the two following headers as follow
   X-Spambayes-Classification: unsure
   X-Spambayes-Spam-Probability: 0.48

What I have is something like this:
   X-Spambayes-Classification: unsure, 0.48

I looked at the Options with:
python -c "from spambayes.Options import options; print 
options.display()" and saw nothing about having the classification and 
score on 2 or only one line.

I'm using the Debian package of spambayes (i.e. v 1.0.4-3) with
procmail (which is calling sb_filter.py)

If someone knows what is going on let me know.

My concern is who's writing the Header.I'm sure it is not Thunderbayes.

For me it is sb_filter.py that does the work. (Hammie might be doing the 
basic work). So I need to find out who is really writing the header and 
notify this application to write the values on 2 lines.

You appear to be using Outlook Express, which despite the name has
little relationship to Outlook. There are a couple of FAQ entries that

An alternative is to modify Thunderbayes to parse and accept a single
X-header line with the two values.

This is a good idea since I can look at the file but it is a .jar file.
I can also ask the author for the code but my java or javascript is 
really rusty.

I though, it was simplier to ask here !

I made a stupid mistake in setting up a new email account on my system.

It has been a very long time since I have added an email account to my and I
forgot to setup to run through the SpamBayes proxy.  Now I have 800+ new
messages that haven't been filtered for spam.

Is there anyway that I can run them through the proxy as a group?  I really
don't want to do it one at a time...

Unix/Linux system?  Mbox format?  If so, you might be able to feed the mail
back into your system using fetchmail or procmail.

Alas, that is completely outside my experience, so these are just wild
guesses.  Maybe (temporarily) switch to the Outlook plugin?  Is there some
macro facility you can use to drive Outlook which will simplify the
one-at-a-time processing?

Make sure you have DEP turned off. Spambayes usually won't run with it
on. This tends to confuse people a lot, because it affects newer
computers more than older ones.

hi,

i am using sb_imapfilter.py to train messages of imap mailboxes.
filtering is done via procmail and sb_filter.
but there's a problem when calling "sb_imapfilter.py -t". often it does
not work, especially when called the first time,
where 'first time' is not meant as the first time ever called for that
user, only the last time called was a day or so before.
when called the second time right after the first unseccessful call, it
seems to be always seccessful.
as i run it with cron, it should be reliable.

the filtering itself works vey good and i like spambayes, so i dont want
to use something else.
the imap server is a cyrus on the same machine with suse linux 9.3 x86_64.

here is what i do:

As with a recent correspondent, my SpamBayes has stopped working since 17th
March for no obvious reason.  Uninstall and re-install has not helped and no
emails can be actioned by the SpamBayes application.  No software was
installed, or changes made to the PC at the time of the failure.

 

Any news on recent changes or viruses affecting the software would be
appreciated.

I am using SpamBayes POP3 Proxy Version 1.0.4 (March 2005) (binary),
with version 2.3.5 (#62, Feb  8 2005, 16:23:02) [MSC v.1200 32 bit
(Intel)] of Python; my operating system is Windows 5.1.2600.2 (Service
Pack 2).  I have trained 0 ham and 0 spam.

The problem I am having is I do not know where to get to know the spam
bayes port numbers to the pop servers (the 110 and 8110 do not work).
I am trying to start using spambayes with Outlook Express.

I'm sorry, I cannot help you. I use Linux and I am Windows/Outlook
illiterate.
I'm sure others can help you.

Let me explain something to you.
Spambayes isn't a company or isn't sold by a company. It's a Free/Libre
Open Source Project, something like a hobby of a few people that they
wanted to share with the world.
There are no techs, no phones, nothing.
Only a mailing list with a lot of unpaid, volunteering, happy spambayes
users (users just like you and me) that want to help other users in
their free time.

I have been using SpamBayes VERY successfully and happily for a couple
of years (or more?) with a standalone Outlook that collects Emails from
a POP3 server. Starting a couple ofweeks ago, in order to better
understand server management and maintenance, I took over the entire
domain Incaprera.com at my home. I have a server (soon two) as a domain
controller, and I am now hosting my own mail server using M'Soft
Exchange. My question: How (if at all) would I best integrate SpamBayes
into this environment? I don't think it works at the Exchange level,
bnut if I install it at the workstation level (i.e., Outlook) then I
guess I must install it at EACH workstation at home, and it will only
work if/when one of them is logged in and is running Outlook. Moreover,
I have no idea what happens if I am logged in at two workstations at
once, each running Outlook with SpamBayes. I would think that each
workstation would develop its own training database, so my removal
results would depend on which station I log in from. That doesn't seem
like a good thing.

 

AM I missing a better solution? Ideas and/or thoughts are appreciated.

Perhaps the Windows event log can help?

Excuse me, but asking the same question 5 times is not going to give you

New installation of Outlook 2003 (Office 2003) on Windows XP computer will
all latest updates.

I installed SpamBayes 1.0.4

When I open Outlook, I immediately get two messages in my folders. One goes
into my Inbox folder, and the other goes into my Junk E-Mail folder.

Both messages are unopenable. They are both 46B in size according to
Outlook, but they have no date, subject, or content.

When I hit the "Spam" button, I get the message that "No filterable mail
items are selected" but I can just delete them using the Delete key.

I have reinstalled SpamBayes, reset the configuration several times, but
keep getting these two ghost messages whenever SpamBayes is installed and I
open Outlook.

When I reset the configuration while Outlook is open, I immediately get two
more ghost messages (one to the Inbox and one to Junk E-Mail).

I do not get the ghost messages when SpamBayes is uninstalled.

Any ideas?

i finally figured out the problem more exactly.

a socket error exception is raised with errno 11 and message
Resource temporarily unavailable
which rather means try again, no data was available.

i found out using some more output in sb_imapfilter.py

hi

maybe you can use the pop3proxy of spambayes, but i think u will need to 
install it on one local
server machine to not have multiple training databases (though this is 
the case if you use the outlook
plugin on each workstation)
as more professional solution i can recommend using cyrus imap on a 
local server. fetch your mails with
fetchmail and let procmail filter them with spambayes and deliver to the 
imap inboxes. every user then can
have his own training database if desired.
i use this setup for a handful of workstations.

After an XP repair session, spammotel seemed to be uninstalled. I've
downloaded the most recent version of the Outlook addon, installed it, and
hoped a revived spambayes functioning. Surprisingly, Outlook 2003 keeps
complaining and disabling spammotel.
The error mesage I get is:

Outlook experienced serious error the last time the add-in 'spambayes' was
opened. Would you like to disable this add-in?

What's wrong?

I don't know what spammotel is, but it seems possible that if you're trying

The two are completely unrelated. Spammotel is an internet service which
supplies unlimited number of email address, allowing the identification of
spam originating from a specific sourse (See http://www.spammotel.com). I
warmly recommend this service. And, spambayes, you know what it is.

I am using SpamBayes POP3 Proxy Version 1.0.4 (March 2006) with Eudora
v5.2.  My OS is Win2k SP4. I have trained 1527 ham and 620 spam.

The problem I am having is that I guess I really do not understand how
Spambayes is supposed to work.  I have Eudora set to look to
"localhost" for mail and all of my incomming mail shows up in
spambayes....OK, now what??  I click on the spam and ham and then
train and the messages disappeare from spambayes but are still in
Eudora.  I thought (this is probably the problem, my thinking) that
spambayes was supposed to keep the mail from getting to Eudora once it
knew spam from ham.  Any help would be appreciated.  I get 500 to
1,000 spams a day now!

I prefer to use a single email address.  Trying to play whack-a-mole with
email addresses seems like conceding defeat to the spammers because it means
they dictate some aspects of my online identity.  I understand that's a
matter of taste though.

You are correct in general - in an Exchange environment you can still use
spambayes, but the training information may not be the same between them.
SpamBayes stores its training information in your "Application Data"
directory, so if you have roaming profiles enabled (and therefore get your
personal "Application Data" directory wherever you log on), then it should
work fine.

I have been using SpamBayes VERY successfully and happily for a couple of
years (or more?) with a standalone Outlook that collects Emails from a POP3
server. Starting a couple ofweeks ago, in order to better understand server
management and maintenance, I took over the entire domain Incaprera.com at
my home. I have a server (soon two) as a domain controller, and I am now
hosting my own mail server using M'Soft Exchange. My question: How (if at
all) would I best integrate SpamBayes into this environment? I don't think
it works at the Exchange level, bnut if I install it at the workstation
level (i.e., Outlook) then I guess I must install it at EACH workstation at
home, and it will only work if/when one of them is logged in and is running
Outlook. Moreover, I have no idea what happens if I am logged in at two
workstations at once, each running Outlook with SpamBayes. I would think
that each workstation would develop its own training database, so my removal
results would depend on which station I log in from. That doesn't seem like
a good thing.

 

AM I missing a better solution? Ideas and/or thoughts are appreciated.

Hi,
I'm still stuck with my spambayes. Outlook keeps dropping spambayes to its
"Disabled items" list. The spambayes log says nothing, in fact it's empty. I
tried to follow the faq instruction fot the "Toolbar items appear, but fail
to work", but to no avail.
Can anything be done, or should I quit spambayes? (an option I dislike).

Hi there,

I love SpamBayes, but it's no longer working for me. The toolbar
appears, but the messages do not seem to be getting filtered. Also,
clicking on the buttons does not move them to the appropriate folders.

I'm using WinXP Pro Version 2002 SP2, SpamBayes v1.0.4. Ive attached a
few log files.  I read the trouble-shooting guide, but it just said to
file a bug. I checked the bugs that were already filed and I didn't see
any way to resolve my issue.

Please help.

            I wonder what else can I do to activate spambayes. Whenever I
start Outlook 2003, the system responds by the following error message:

            My spambayes1.log file is empty. The spambayes buttons do
appear, but they are completely inactive. I tried all suggestion on the
spambayes faq list, but am still not able to reactivate the add-in.

Anyone know how to stop spam that does not have ASCII text but pictures
that have embedded text that are  not filterable by spam filers as yet.
these seem to be the most difficult for me to remove. Adds for pills or
rubish that are clearly not intended to advertise (unless they are aimed
at complete fools)
But must only be aimed at clogging up email systems . It only seems to
propigate in my outlook. seems to be blocked when I get my email from a
web based email like yahoo.

Other people claim it does. I don't know, I personally don't use

How do you do that?  I went into the 'Properties' section of each account
and changed it from my dial up connection to "Local Network", the only other
option available, but while I can still retrieve my mail, it still doesn't
filter it.
