Ugh. I agonized over this puzzle for weeks, and then as SOON as I post a 
request for help, I suddenly find the answer on my own. Go figure.  ;-)

The answer was something I'd never have expected: when I created the 
PanedWidget, one of the initialization options was "hull_borderwidth=1". 
Somehow or other, this was preventing the tree from working correctly. I 
still have no idea WHY, but removing that line fixed the problem.
