Travis: How to skip builds

Hi Folks, just something I learned about TravisCI. The badge on our README.md currently shows an "error". But there wasn't one. On my last PR Travis started its job but I got there an canceled them manually. This was because of saving credits and carbon. I only updated some text files and not python code. To prevent that the TravisCI support told me to use skip messages inside commit messages to prevent this. https://docs.travis-ci.com/user/customizing-the-build/#skipping-a-build Just write "[skip travis]" somewhere else. I'll try this next time. Christian

pkexec uses the default authentication agent on every distro. So if you call a GUI-app on a desktop it will ask you for your password in a nice interface that looks like all the rest of your desktop environment. If you call it on a headless machine it will ask for you password on the terminal. sudo can just ask at the terminal. Back in the days when BiT had two GUI for Gnome and KDE we used gksudo and kdesudo to do the job. After removing the Gnome GUI and migrate the KDE GUI into Qt I needed a common way to launch the GUI on all desktop environments. pkexec does exactly this.The permission escalation with PolKit is something different. It allows to run sub-routines with higher permissions but keep the main app at user level.

Hello folks, this is a general question about something that I can't get into my head. And I have less knowledge about that part of a GNU/Linux system. What is the difference of pkexec and sudo? What is the advantage of using pkexec to run BIT as root? Kind Christian

Use a distinctive app icon for BiT?

Currently BiT uses a standard icon as app icon: "document-save" A unique distinctive icon would great as visual "trademark". I have found one issue discussing this (stil open): https://github.com/bit-team/backintime/issues/215 Are there icon designer listening here who want to come along with proposals? I think I could add this icon to the resource bundle to get rid of missing app and sys tray icons...

Correct way to execute BiT CLI as root (to show system tray icon)?

We have BiT qt GUI (root) but no corresponding starter script for BiT CLI (root). Is there any documentation or recommendation how to start it? Background: I want to test if sudo backintime --profile-id 1 --debug backup-job shows the sys tray icon if I start it as root. What is the recommended way of starting "backintime" as root so that the sys tray icon appears?
