Re: mod Fw: Snapshot directory duplicated, permission denied
Hello Christian and all, Thank you for the questions.
Might it be that you used an older BIT than 1.2.1 before? Or another Ubuntu version?
I don't remember what was the version of BiT on my system before I upgraded. I was on Trisquel Nabia, based on Ubuntu 20.04; now I am on Trisquel Aramo, based on Ubuntu 22.04.
Or you used that SSD on another machine, too?
No. I use this SSD to back up one BiT profile (from one machine only).
Compare the permissions, user- and group names you via "ls -ld"
$ ls -ld /media/redacted_username/time-machine drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Feb 26 20:42 /media/redacted_username/time-machine $ ls -ld /media/redacted_username/time-machine1/ drwxrwxrwx 5 redacted_username redacted_username 4096 Sep 3 2023 /media/redacted_username/time-machine1/ Any clue on why a duplicate was created? What are the recommended permissions for /time-machine Mark. On Thursday, March 7th, 2024 at 3:59 PM, c.*****@posteo.jp <c.****teo.jp> wrote:
Dear Johnno,
bit-dev admin here.
Thanks for your message. I checked on my site and can confirm that you are a member of the mailing list.
But there is no held message from you because you didn't sent to the list itself ("bit-dev@python.org") but to "bit-dev-join@python.org". The latter is only for subscribing and other commands. Send again to "bit-dev@python.org" please and it should work.
Regarding to your original message. Your version of BIT (1.2.1) is quit outdated and very old. It is the same with Ubuntu 20. Be aware that Canonical use the term "LTS" for marketing reasons. Ubuntu LTS is not that LTS and stable as you might think. If you need something stable you could stick to "Debian stable".

I am not aware of a change that could cause that behavior. But I am not into all details of BIT.
I suggest to make a manual backup of that folders. And then modify the folder permissions.
Thanks Christian

Hello BiT contributor,
I sent a message a week ago which I think was not approved (yet) - see below.
Is there something wrong with the message?
Thanks for reading my mail. Mark.

Hi everyone,
The directory where snapshots live was duplicated - coincidentally that is the first time I plug my external SSD (where snapshots live) to my computer after an upgrade from Trisquel Nabia 10.0 (based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)) to Aramo 11.0 (Jammy Jellyfish).
This is the usual path to BiT on the external SSD: /media/redactedusername/time-machine/backintime/
This is the duplicated path: /media/redactedusername/time-machine1/backintime/
$ backintime backup
Back In Time Version: 1.2.1
Back In Time comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY. This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it under certain conditions; type `backintime --license' for details.
INFO: Lock INFO: Take a new snapshot. If it is on a removable drive please plug it. Waiting 30 seconds. ERROR: /media/redactedusername/time-machine/backintime/x220/redactedusername/1 does not exist [...] WARNING: Can't find snapshots folder! INFO: Unlock
I can list all the snapshots of the duplicated directory: $ ls /media/redactedusername/time-machine1/backintime/x220/redactedusername/1/ Display all 586 possibilities?
I do not have permission to list: $ ls /media/redactedusername/time-machine/ ls: cannot open directory '/media/redactedusername/time-machine/': Permission denied
Has something changed with the version of BiT distributed with Jammy Jellyfish from the one available with Focal Fossa? I am wondering whether I should update the permission of /media/redactedusername/time-machine/ but I am also wondering why a duplicate /media/redactedusername/time-machine1/ was created. This duplicate confuses me - I am not sure what to do.
Any help would be welcomed.
Joh.

Aramo and Nabia both offering BIT 1.2.1 <https://packages.trisquel.org/search?suite=all&searchon=names&keywords=backintime-qt> > drwx------ 2 root root 4096 Feb 26 20:42 /media/redacted_username/time-machine > drwxrwxrwx 5 redacted_username redacted_username 4096 Sep 3 2023 /media/redacted_username/time-machine1/ No idea how this can happen. I assume it wasn't BIT but an extern event or manipulation. The first folder can be accessed only by the user root. The second folder is open to everyone. Maybe you tried to migrate/move the snapshot settings from one machine/installation to another. And while that process you switch from root to user or the other way around? I really don't know and think we will never know. I suggest you again try to explain your current problem and we might suggest a solution. I assume you will have to make some manual work on that folders and files. BIT can't help you here.

Is this snapshot folder created by BIT running as root or by BIT running as user? I can not say for sure how BIT manipulate this values. But on my system (Debian 12) roots snapshots folder persmissions are like this: drwxr-xr-x 3 root root and in there you find the regular "backintime" folder drwxrwxrwx 3 root root 4096 14. Sep 2023 backintime Looks the same for "user". Kind Christian

No. I've been using one machine only.

How can I check? I don't remember. This backup profile was created in ~2021. Mark

Sounds like a lot of possibilities where something was going "wrong". In the end we will never know. I suggest to start again from scratch with a fresh profile.
