Use a distinctive app icon for BiT?

Currently BiT uses a standard icon as app icon: "document-save" A unique distinctive icon would great as visual "trademark". I have found one issue discussing this (stil open): https://github.com/bit-team/backintime/issues/215 Are there icon designer listening here who want to come along with proposals? I think I could add this icon to the resource bundle to get rid of missing app and sys tray icons...

As a person who uses "DeLorean DMC-12" label on his backup drives, I strongly support "Flux Capacitor" icon in the bug thread. The icon is not ideal, and can be improved IMHO. Unfortunately, I'm no designer, and have no long time slot to design and build it. I might give it a try, but there's no promises attached, as always. The elegant thing about the current solution is that it always fits with the general style of the system theme. If we designed our own logo, it would probably often be a mis-fit because of color, dark/bright, scaling etc. On the other hand, we're having a lot of trouble with system icon themes, and @aryoda can sing lots of songs about that. So if anyone is feeling inspired to design something, why not try a custom "brand identity" for backintime with its own icon :) Cheers, Michael On 24.11.2022 08:28, Hakan Bayındır wrote:

Hi, in August 2016 I had a chat with a girl named Bella who wanted to contribute an icon for BiT. She sent me couple ideas that we discussed for a while. I liked the idea with pins (for snapshots) sitting on a clock (see attached BiT_Design003_clock_location.png).

Together we improved that design to the attached SVG icon. The clock is similar looking to the clock from the Back-to-Future Movies. I also made a progress icon for new snapshots. But I never published that. Don't know why.

Hello together, that are great icon proposals. I'm not a designer and not known for a "good taste". ;) So all my opinions here coming from my stomach and not from any expertise. :D There is also an open Issue about a new icon. https://github.com/bit-team/backintime/issues/215 I like the idea with the Flux Capacitor there. But I also find the clock with the tips on it interesting. Maybe we can combine that? Replacing the arrow with the Flux Capacitor? At the end IMHO I would say that it is up to Germar to made the final decision. Kind Christian

The icons show excellent design skills and ideas IMHO. One important question (before using them) is: Did Bella explicitly contribute the icons under the GPL-2.0 license (which BiT is using). Otherwise we could end up in a lawsuit (worst case ;-) @Germar: Do you have any written indications for that (or could we contact Bella again to ask)?
