I realize presently that I am mistaken about this. In experimenting with a simple example, namespaces are handle elegantly. So the generated wrapper class is caused by other things in "real" code, which I will endeavor to avoid. In further pyste experimenting, I put my C++ code in a namespace. First surprise was that I needed to decorate my class name in the *.pyste file with its housed namespace. Doing this allowed pyste to run successfully, but. Second surprise that the generated python interface class now contains a "wrapper" class. Is this necessary? The class is easily accessible by opening the namespace, or not, depending on the C++ choice.

pyste code problem

I run on linux and use gcc 3.3. I'm using a recent CVS head of the boost libraries. My pyste reports version 0.9.28. The only problem that I had with pyste is that the code it produces references local *.h files like they are system includes. Prior alternating the python code I had to change includes like "#include <a.h>" to "#include "a.h". The coding changes was easy. The code from Exporter.py, line 53, needs to change to: def WriteInclude(self, codeunit): codeunit.Write('include', '#include "%s"\n' % self.info.include) Hopefully this change will be made to a future release of this great product. Every thing that I've looked for in this product, I found. I am impressed!

vector_indexing_suite issue

I am successfully using vector_indexing_suite in following code: class_<std::vector<B> >("vector_B") .def(vector_indexing_suite<std::vector<B> >()) ; However, I find that it requires that the B class conforms to the Equality Comparable concept where the STL standard only demands it to conform to the Assignable concept. I'm wondering if this is necessary, and if so how the operator== method should be coded. Can it simply always return true or false? Or compare "this" pointers?

This is the one major boost.python feature that find missing from pyste version 0.9.28. Will it support it in the future? Or does it now and it just isn't documented?

indexing_v2 status update

Here's a status report on the indexing_v2 work I've been doing: o I've improved the handling for containers of shared_ptr's, so that sorting and searching automatically do the right indirection. o Fixed various layout and naming convention issues o container_proxy is now strongly exception safe (commit or rollback) o The container_proxy Generator parameter now works even on MSVC6 o I've added a Flags parameter to allow expensive features (in terms of object code size) to be selectively disabled. o I've added convenience templates for use without partial template specialization support (vector_suite, map_suite, etc.) These last two points bring the interface a little closer to what Joel de Guzman had originally, although the flags that he used were passed separately as individual bool parameters instead of as flag bits. He certainly wasn't kidding about the extra effort in supporting MSVC6. So as far as I know, there is no outstanding coding work remaining for the current level of functionality. I'm now updating the documentation to reflect the recent changes, and then the suite, in my opinion, will be ready for release. One possible extension I've been thinking about, as suggested by Ralf W. Grosse-Kunstleve, is the idea of allowing construction of a container from a Python iterable object: e.g. v = Vector ([1,2,3]) The ideal way to do it would be to massage the single input parameter into two C++ iterators that could be passed to the templated vector constructor, but I haven't looked far enough into the constructor dispatching internals to know how to do this, or even if it is possible. The problem, AFAICS, would be knowing when to select that overload of the constructor and when not to, and how/where to insert the necessary code to create the two iterators from the single Python object. Any advice would be appreciated. This might also be significant for another of Ralf's suggestions - pickling support. So I have two loosely related questions - what do people thing about including the current indexing_v2 suite in release 1.31, and should I try adding the iterator-based constructor support? -- Raoul Gough. export LESS='-X'

pyste documentation problem

In experimenting with pyste I believe I've run into problem. I'm working from a recent boost CVS head version. My pyste reports version 0.9.28. The "boost/libs/python/pyste/doc/running_pyste.html" states to run pyste like: python pyste.py --module=mymodule file1.pyste file2.pyste python pyste.py --module=mymodule --generate-main file1.pyste file2.pyste I discovered that I needed to include "--multiple" in both lines to get the proper behavior.

boost numeric tests

I'm running the tests on CVS boost.python, I have numeric and numarray installed, and I get errors like this: (compiling with Pythons 2.2.3+ and 2.3.3): Failure in example: exercise_numarray(x, p) from line #6 of __main__._numarray_tests Exception raised: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.3/doctest.py", line 442, in _run_examples_inner compileflags, 1) in globs File "<string>", line 1, in ? AttributeError: 'NumArray' object has no attribute 'array' Then the rest of the tests fail because the C++ half never got a chance to run. Any idea why this might be happening? Thanks, Daniel Holth

FYI: Most of Boost.Python works with Linux Intel C++ 8.0 (Build 20031231Z Package ID: l_cc_pc_8.0.058) but there are a couple of tricks to know: - To avoid unresolved symbol warnings /opt/intel_cc_80/lib/libirc.a has to be converted to a shared library: /opt/intel_cc_80/bin/icc -shared -o libirc.so /opt/intel_cc_80/lib/libirc.a Store libirc.so somewhere in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH. - To use the native Python define LD_PRELOAD (thanks to Raoul Gough for discovering this). E.g.: LD_PRELOAD="/some/path/libirc.so:/opt/intel_cc_80/lib/libunwind.so.5" export LD_PRELOAD All Boost.Python tests (libs/python/test) compile. If compiled with -O0 all run successfully. If compiled with -O2 seven end with a segmentation fault. Attached are a few example compilation and link commands.
