thanks for the hint. There was indeed a tag_version=dev in my setup.cfg. I was not aware of that as I'm quite new to packaging. Sorry for that.

I guess you checked setup.py and setup.cfg? I suspect something
in the latter.
devpi upload just calls "python setup.py sdist" (or whatever packaging
format you choose) and does notthing special there.
