egg-info directory in source distribution of setuptools

I noticed that there is an egg-info directory in the source directory (and there's one in the svn sandbox with just one file, entry_points.txt). It seems like this is not necessary, since these files will be generated by setup.py. It's only a minor problem...we are mirroring the source repository locally, and when we run "setup.py install", it causes a modification of some of the files to show up (due to newline changes and some difference in file listings). Was including this directory intentional for something? -Eric

If they do, installation proceeds with no further questions asked.

--tag-svn-revision=0?

To avoid committing to a tag just to alter setup.cfg, I found myself wanting to do something like this: python setup.py egg_info --tag-svn-revision=0 --tag-build='' sdist but: error: option --tag-svn-revision must not have an argument Could this, or something similar, be made legal? John

Subversion on some Windows setups ends up making files read-only and not deletable by easy_install, so when it goes to clean up the temporary directory with the checkout in it, it fails. I thought I'd already worked around this, though. Are you using the latest setuptools (0.6a10)?

Release of bdist_msi 1.0

I just completed bdist_msi, based on feedback I received. The files are available from http://www.dcl.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/home/loewis/bdist_msi/ Here are the changes from the beta: - changed ProductName to "Python x.y PACKAGE-a.b", to follow bdist_wininst, and to have the packages sort together in Add-Remove-Programs. - fixed missing import - added support for --install-script; dropped/disabled support for --pre-install-script (one implementation attempt is still there; if you manage to get it work, please let me know) I plan to contribute this to Python soon, for inclusion in 2.5. setuptools requiring itself to run... thus not running

A user of one of my webapps reported that after running upgrade one night, setuptools was no longer functioning properly. Apparently it somehow got installed in multi-version mode, requiring pkg_resources to be imported *before* you could use setuptools. Which of course leaves it in the somewhat amusing state that it needs to import pkg_resources before it can import pkg_resources.... Isn't it true that 1. the main reason-for-being of Eggs is to allow keeping metadata with installed projects and 2. Eggs can have several different installed formats? Phillip has taken a lot of trouble correcting peoples' misconceptions about this kind of thing -- perhaps it's a good idea to make the bullet point above a bit more accurate? John

We are trying to make ipython installable from svn by doing easy_install ipython==dev On linux it works ok already, but not on Windows.
