PyPI registration and ownership of package names

Are PyPI names exclusive to the first registration? Not to single out a particular developer, but does the presence of http://pypi.python.org/pypi/Reporting/1.0 mean that the top-level name 'Reporting' always and forever belongs to a proprietary package with no upload? Thanks, Jeff

easy_install and https

Hello, If I do : $ easy_install -U somepackage The script will scan the PyPI simple page to look for an egg. But if it fails on an url page that is starting with https, and if the user is behind a proxy that blocks it, it will block there before any egg has a chance to be downloaded. I guess a good practice is to avoid https URLs in any metadata, I guess the user can also call easy_install with the direct egg url in that case, but maybe easy_install could do something particular on https links to avoid this issue, if doable ? Maybe by ordering the reading, to put https ones at the end ? wanted: a catalog of setuptools plugins

Folks: The setuptools plugins architecture may eventually supplant Makefiles in my projects. It's very nice that people can re-use other people's development hacks as packages containing setuptools plugins instead of by cutting and pasting snippets of code into their Makefiles. It would be nice if I could find a listing of such plugins that I might want to use in my own development. Here is a list of setuptools plugins that I just found by browsing the Python Package Index: setuptools_bzr, setuptools_darcs, setuptools_mtn, setuptools_qt4, darcsver, eggchecker, iw.releaser, apydia, bbfreeze (oh I wish I had known about bbfreeze a month ago!), py2app, mkcode, eggtestinfo, easydeb, buildutils, hg.setuptools, setuptools-git Here is one that I wish someone would convert into a plugin (it runs unit tests using Twisted's "trial" unit test framework): https://code.fluendo.com/elisa/trac/browser/trunk/setup.py So my question is: how can we make it easier for people to find these? I was unaware of most of these until just now and there are probably other useful plugins that I'm still unaware of. One idea that I had was to run a query on the Python Package Index database to find all packages whose setup.py's define entry points in the "distutils.commands" group name. Another was to put the word out (i.e. in the setuptools documentation) that if your package is a setuptools plugin, that you should name your package "setuptools_blah_blah" and register it on the Python Package Index. Hello! I'm trying to build an app bundle of Jabbim client [1] for Mac OS X using py2app & setuptools. I have followed py2app docs [2]. When I build an 'alias' (see Development with alias mode) mode app, I can run it. Any idea why setuptools-0.6c8-py2.5.egg/pkg_resources.pyc does not 'exist'? When I open Python interpreter, import pkg_resources works OK. When running the app or building an alias bundle, I have to export PYTHON_PATH and use --use-pythonpath flag, after that, it works. When building a deployment bundle, it does not work. The -x is to --exclude-scripts, and -d sets the --install-directory. -m means multi-version, which keeps it from checking for sys.path compatibility and avoids creating an easy-install.pth. -z means not to unzip the files, and -a means --always-copy, so even if the requested egg is already on sys.path, it'll be copied to targetdir.

Easy Install - download an egg

This is a dumb question, but I can't find the answer in the easy_install documentation (I have to say, I always find that page hard to follow...) How do I use easy_install to just locate and download an egg (not install it)? Suppose I have a directory "eggs" and I want to grab a batch of eggs from PyPI or wherever. I can simply go to the appropriate download pages with my web browser, and download the files, but surely I can get easy_install to grab the files for me? Thanks, Paul.

Folks: I'm trying to get the Nevow project to accept a patch [1] that makes it easier to use Nevow with setuptools, even though the maintainers of Nevow passionately hate setuptools. In such a situation, any tiny unnecessary difference between distutils behavior and setuptools behavior is another grain of sand in the gears. So with the patch that I've offered to Nevow, if you run "./setup.py sdist" without setuptools installed, you get: Nevow-0.9.31+r15049.tar.gz and if you run "./setup.py sdist" with setuptools installed, you get: Nevow-0.9.31-r15049.tar.gz Why are the version numbers different? I personally prefer the '-' instead of the '+' in the version number, and I would be happy if distutils in Python 2.4.5 used '-'. However, unless the distutils is going to start using '-', then I suggest that setuptools v0.6 final also use '+', so that there is one less thing that is different. setuptools Fails with Subversion 1.5

Hey all, With Subversion 1.5 entering alpha, I've been using it for more than just a few projects, and I've noticed that setuptools fails to run in a 1.5 working copy. For the short term, I've found that I can just modify the setuptools source to trust that version 9 WCs will work the same as version 8 WCs. The diff for that is attached. Based on what I've read of subversion's README on the format of the entries file, the modification I've made should be just fine - the overall structure of the file is the same, there's just some new tags possible which will already not get stuck in the regex already in place. In my local testing, using setuptools for installing files works just fine with this patch in place. Peace, Augie Fackler

Hi, Windows Installer Executables using distutils I am able to create windows installer executable using 'python setup.py' on command prompt. using below code is written in 'setup.py' from distutils.core import setup setup(name='Test', description="Python Test", version='0.1', script_name = 'setup.py', script_args = ['bdist_wininst','--install-script=post.py'], scripts = ['Post.py'], data_files = getDATA()) Following are the issues need to be resolved after installing windows installer 'Test.exe' 1.It installs at default location and creates a folder 'Test' under 'C:\Python24' Question: Could you please suggest me how to change the default location using above mentioned code or can specify location on UI in windows installer ? 2.
