New submission from Zooko O'Whielacronx <zooko(a)zooko.com>: It is often the case that a binary .egg is usable and an sdist is not (when the package requires compiling C or C++ code). Here is an example where this is currently happening: http://allmydata.org/trac/tahoe/ticket/773#comment:7 Tahoe-LAFS requires zfec>=1.1.0. There are two distributions found during build a binary .egg of zfec v1.4.1 for the current platform and python version and an sdist of zfec v1.4.5. Setuptools is choosing the latter, which then fails to build because the C/C++ compiler isn't set up on the target system. I apologize for posting out of my thread, but I tried to "reply" twice to my original thread, and my message didn't seem to appear anywhere. Maybe it's just delayed... Anyway, here goes: All: This may be a duplicate post - I can't see the post I just submitted, so I'm trying again. Thanks for the suggestions. I can't use 2.6 because it isn't installed on the systems where my script will be running. I'm attempting to use the 'eggsecutable' suggestion. How do I get command line parameters passed into my entry point main() function? In Java, it is possible to create a .jar file with a main() method embedded somewhere in one of the .class files. It is then possible to run the main() method from the command line something like this: java -jar foo.jar I believe this will work with only one main() defined - if there are multiple ones, then you have to specify the path (internal to the jar file). I gather from previous googling that there isn't a python command line option equivalent to -jar for eggs (although that might be kind of handy) but that you can add an egg to your path without installing it by doing something like the following (in a bash shell): export PYTHONPATH=foo.egg This will then allow you to run a python script at the command line without having to actually install the egg to the normal "site- packages" directory. My questions: - Is it possible to embed a script with a "main" entry point in an egg, and run that from the command line? - If so, how do you pass command line arguments to that main? - Is this a massive abuse of the intended usage of setuptools? Nope. There is also a way to make an egg an executable in its own right; you can declare an entry point 'eggsecutable' in the 'setuptools.installation' entry point group, and when you bdist_egg it, the egg will include a simple #!/bin/sh script header to put the egg on sys.path and run the entry point function. The main downside to this is that the egg cannot be renamed or run via a symlink with another name; you have to run it as foobar-1.2.3.egg.

I have a folder tree of data files. I can't seem to get distutils to recognize "data/*" as data_files (even though it works for package_data). Is there any nice way of specifying that I have a folder of data files? - Pavel Panchekha

Problems with setup.py

I am currently having difficulty with a setup.py script. The problem was originally brought to my attention by someone packaging the project for Fedora 11, but I can reproduce a similar problem on my Jaunty box. When "python setup.py build" is run, the following output is produced (running with -n switch): running install running build running build_py running build_ext running build_scripts changing mode of build/scripts-2.6/suvat running install_lib running install_scripts changing mode of /usr/local/bin/suvat running install_data error: can't copy 'd': doesn't exist or not a regular file This is for me; the Fedora issue is with 's' instead of 'd'. This is with different versions of setup.py. What do I need to do to include it? The README is not "package data" because it's not inside a package. You can't install package data in a project that only includes modules. In any case, there's no point in shipping documentation inside an egg, because only your project's *code* will be able to read it, not humans. Human-readable documentation only belongs in a source distribution. Note that, in general, you do not need to distribute eggs for your project. The egg format is intended for plugins and other situations that require pre-built, ready-to-execute binaries. pip, buildout, and easy_install can all build their own eggs on the target system in most cases, so the only benefit to distributing eggs is if you have, say, a C extension module and want to provide pre-compiled versions for Mac OS and Windows. (And for Windows, you can build a bdist_wininst .exe instead; easy_install at least will still be able to use it, and you'll make Paul Moore happy. ;-) (That's an inside joke, don't worry if you don't know who Paul is.))
