I have custom code to create a nice installer from many Python eggs. The problem is that in these eggs there are many binary files, as for example png or sometimes even dlls (sigh), and they are not declared anywhere in setup.py or Manifest.in. The best solution would be of course to force everyone to include them in setup.py, which would make them part of the package when running egg_info. This is probably not feasible because: - they are too many and everywhere - there is no easy way to detect from the developer if he's including everything, and the only way would be to see the errors on Hudson So the only solution left is to: 1. build with bdist_egg 2. copy inside the build egg all the binaries found any suggestions about how to do that or other ideas? This procedure should normally be run always on the Hudson server, so I can make sure for example that there are no artifacts and the directory tree is always clean..

RFC: Binary Distribution Format for distutils2/packaging

Sometimes, binary distributions are useful. This is especially true for Windows and maybe Macs. (They may also be useful for other platforms in closed environments, where the shortcomings of distutils platform definitions aren't such a problem.) Distutils2/packaging (d2/p :) doesn't support the egg format. The bdist format is problematic because: - bdist names don't include Python versions and can't be reliably parsed to get project versions and platforms. - The presence of bdists alongside of source and egg distributions breaks setuptools based tools, like easy_install, pip and buildout because they are mistaken for source distributions with wacky version numbers. In discussing this at the PyCon packaging sprint, Tarek and i came up with the following options: 1) setuptools eggs - Have to support legacy meta-data format 2) bdist - Need to add python version for: - compatibility info - also provides delimeter between version # and platform - Need to update setuptools/distribute to handle (or ignore) them. 3) New egg-like format "pbd" - Arrange suffix so ignored by setuptools/distribute - new-style meta data - would be a zip file - Essentially, .egg format with new-style meta data and different suffix. Option 3) looks the best to us, so we propose: - Introduce a new binary distribution format with a ".pbd" suffix and an egg-like structure. An example file name: ZODB3-3.10.0b1-py2.6-macosx-10.4-x86_64.pbd - Deprecate bdist format. D2/p will not support generation or installation of bdist distributions. Greetings: I am sorry for being presumptuous to impose myself upon the list here, but I am frustrated and needing help before I can continue.... I have DistUtils2 1.0a4 installed already, but this is my first time trying to use it... >From this documentation list here [1], it says to use: from distutils2.core import setup then when I try to run: $ python setup.py build it says that there is no module named core ??? Hello: Could someone explain why the difference in the two versions? Hi, I've just uploaded pypiserver 0.5.2 to the python package index. pypiserver is a minimal PyPI compatible server. It can be used to serve a set of packages and eggs to easy_install or pip. pypiserver is easy to install (i.e. just easy_install pypiserver). It doesn't have any external dependencies. http://pypi.python.org/pypi/pypiserver/ should contain enough information to easily get you started running your own PyPI server in a few minutes. What state are the docs for "packaging" in right now? Of: http://docs.python.org/dev/packaging/setupcfg.html and http://docs.python.org/dev/packaging/introduction.html ... the latter comes directly after the former in navigation order. The former describes setup.cfg-driven and presumably pysetup-driven stuff, but the latter goes on to discuss setup.py syntax and looks like it might be distutils docs with a bit of search-and-replace done. - C

Buildout - Pass parameter to interpreter

I want to run my code with the -3 flag of the 2.6 interpreter. The proxy script that buildout's zc.recipe.egg:scripts generates does not accept arbitrary interpreter arguments. How can I pass the -3 flag to the proxy script or otherwise run with the -3 flag? Thanks! Craig Younkins
