Hi all, devpi-0.9.1 is out which fixes bugs and introduces support for pushing a tested release candidate from a private index to pypi. PyPI Download Counts

Hello! As you have have noticed the download counts on PyPI are no longer updating. Originally this was due to an issue with the script that processes these download counts. However I have now removed the download counts from the PyPI webui and their use via the API is considered deprecated. There are numerous reasons for their removal/deprecation some of which are: - Technically hard to make work with the new CDN - The CDN is being donated to the PSF, and the donated tier does not offer any form of log access - The work around for not having log access would greatly reduce the utility of the CDN - Highly inaccurate - A number of things prevent the download counts from being inaccurate, some of which include: - pip download cache - Internal or unofficial mirrors - Packages not hosted on PyPI (for comparisons sake) - Mirrors or unofficial grab scripts causing inflated counts (Last I looked 25% of the downloads were from a known mirroring script). - Not particularly useful - Just because a project has been downloaded a lot doesn't mean it's good - Similarly just because a project hasn't been downloaded a lot doesn't mean it's bad In short because it's value is low for various reasons, and the tradeoffs required to make it work are high It has been not an effective use of resources. The API will continue to return values for it in order to not break scripts, however in the future all these values will be set to 0. b.pypi.python.org is an official mirror that runs on Google App engine, and it uses a special mirror package built just for GAE. Code for it is found here. https://bitbucket.org/loewis/pypi-appengine b.pypi.python.org has been broken for over 104 days according to http://www.pypi-mirrors.org, and this is because of an issue when we switched pypi over to serving over SSL. I have submitted a pull request to fix this. https://bitbucket.org/loewis/pypi-appengine/pull-request/2/change-pypi-mirr… but it hasn't been accepted. I am one of the maintainers of b.pypi.python.org, so I can see the logs and push out a new version. I haven't needed to push a version out before, and I'm a little hesitant incase I do it wrong and break something. I also don't want to push code to GAE from my fork, until my PR gets accepted or else someone else in the future might deploy the original one again and remove my fix. Two things: 1. Now that we have the pypi CDN up, do we still need this mirror? 2. If yes to 1. if someone can take a minute to review my PR, and leave comments, or if you have the power, accept my pull request and push out a new version so we can get the mirror up to date. (I was also getting this until I used easy_install to upgrade) What is supposed to happen with stuff that used to do `use_setuptools()` in their setup.py now? Pylons : include git hash inside distribution package

Hello, I want to include latest git hash, whenever I build the egg for Pylons application. Is it possible to do that without breaking the other features of setup.py file. Eg : python setup.py bdist_egg (Is it possible to do it within this command?) Thank you

buildout 1 still not managing to pin buildout to 1.x

Hi All, So, having given up on buildout 2 for this package again (need for 2.5 support) I dutifully put in the bootstrap.py from buildout 1: curl http://downloads.buildout.org/1/bootstrap.py > bootstrap.py python2.5 on my mac didn't work, thanks to a broken system python, so on to 2.6, which appeared to go okay except: buzzkill:checker chris$ bin/nosetests zc.buildout 2 needs distribute, not setuptools. Are you using an outdated bootstrap.py? Make sure you have the latest version downloaded from http://downloads.buildout.org/2/bootstrap.py Great... Wonderful... I thought 1/bootstrap.py was supposed to pin to buildout 1 for you without the need for any other voodoo? Something prompted by the setuptools merge, and its impact on pip. Does Python's packaging metadata need a way of declaring in a package that it is a merge of (two or more) other packages? Obviously this is a rare scenario, but it's painful when it occurs (how can a tool know that setuptools 0.7 is a later version of distribute than 0.6.36?) Paul

devpi-0.9: pypi caching server and packaging workflow meta tool

Hi all, i just released devpi-server-0.9, devpi-client-0.9 and a convenience meta "devpi-0.9" package to install them both. Main news for devpi-server, the caching pypi server: - github-style user and index management: you can upload to USER/NAME indexes with the default being "root/dev", an overlay index that serves all pypi.python.org packages and the ones you upload to it. - integrates now well with latest CDN changes, maintains a consistent quite real-time local pypi cache - redis dependency is gone, only pure Python deps left Main news for the initial release of devpi-client, the packaging workflow tool: - provides install/upload/test sub commands to perform common tasks with an index - provides user/index/use/server commands to manage context and the automated server Lastly, to get started super-quickly, there is a new site with all the docs: http://doc.devpi.net I'd like to use the 0.9 series to refine the command line interface, fix bugs and implement some more functionality before heading for a more stable 1.0 release. have fun, holger krekel

Setuptools/Distribute error with 0.7.2

Hi -- I'm hoping for some help with an error I'm suddenly getting with distribute, setuptools. It had been working fine, and seemingly overnight it stopped working. I really don't think I changed anything. This is part of a chef recipe, which also installs virtualenv. It appears that a new version 0.7.2 is downloaded, but it fails to install, and then the rollback fails, as well. Not sure quite what is wrong here and how to fix it! distribute_setup.py in package + setuptools 0.7.2 = package uninstallable

If a user's install (be it virtualenv or otherwise) becomes "infected" with setuptools 0.7.2, my packages appear to become uninstallable, with errors like the log below.
