It would actually be nice if "pkg_resources" and 

"setuptools-core" were available as separate PyPI distributions, and setuptools bundled them together with easy_install.

This would seem to require quite a sizeable refactoring of setuptools, since the easy_install command is just an entry point for setuptools.command.easy_install.main(). Regards, Vinay Sajip
