Great-- thanks! That was a problem and the fact that when I tried to run it
afterwards, I had to go to the Python\Scripts directory, easy_install
loaded into that.

Apparently, your computer's python installation is configured to open .py files in notepad, instead of in Python. Try typing:
python ez_setup.py
Instead of just ez_setup.py.
