The way to achieve a database for Python would be to provide tools for conversion of eggs to rpms and debs,
Such tools already exist, although the conversion takes place from source distributions rather than egg distributions.
What is the status of the deb backend? The only one I know is unofficial maintained by Andrew Straw, but my information my be lagging behind.
I was under the impression that there were 2 .deb tools, neither one "official" in any sense, any more than 'bdist_rpm' is really "official" for RPM-based systems.
By the way, if these tools work well, they are priceless!
I haven't had need to use any of them, so I don't really know.
