Regardless of what I think of Setuptools or Distribute, I definitely am *very* glad the Python BDFL does not have the power to make a change to a third-party project as you're suggesting.
I just read the rest of the thread on python dev. Yes, I should probably be glad it did not happen. OTOH, grumbl ... horrible breakage ... essential piece of infrastructure ... allowed to persist....
