this should either be "ext.extra_compile_args.append(value)" or "append_next_word=ext.extra_compile_args". (depending on however makesetup is supposed to work). in its current form, distutils is adding
makesetup actually does the same thing, and I think this makes -C completely useless. (Distutils was therefore preserving compatibility.) I've sent a note off to python-dev about this, suggesting that the second fix should be made; we'll see what the reaction is.
