Such tools already exist, although the conversion takes place from source distributions rather than egg distributions.
What is the status of the deb backend? The only one I know is unofficial maintained by Andrew Straw, but my information my be lagging behind. By the way, if these tools work well, they are priceless! Cheers, Gaël
