Problem with Setuptools on Ubuntu 8.0.4
Hi: I have the following problem with Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop and Xandros on the EEE ASUS. I am trying to install PyAMF-0.3.1 python setup.py install Traceback (most recent call last): File "setup.py", line 6, in <module> use_setuptools() File "/home/afrancis/Public/PyAMF-0.3.1/ez_setup.py", line 91, in use_setuptools import setuptools; setuptools.bootstrap_install_from = egg zipimport.ZipImportError: can't decompress data; zlib not available Any help solving this would be appreciated. Cheers, Andrew

Looks like you're missing python-zlib or some such Ubuntu package. Dunno what it'd actually be called, that's just a guess at the name.

I don't see a python-zlib in the Hardy distribution. Debian seems to have a python-zlib package. So what is the easiest way of adapting that package for Ubuntu? Cheers, Andrew

IIRC, python2.5-minimal is part of the default installation. Reinstall that package and find out what caused that file to go away.
Thanks for the advice. I left out an important piece of information - I installed Stackless Python on my system. I think the problems lie with the Stackless Python setup. Cheers, Andrew
