Distribute 0.6.1 released
Hello I am happy to announce the release of Distribute 0.6.1. Changes: * zip_ok is now True by default. * package_index.urlopen now catches BadStatusLine and malformed url errors. * Fixed invalid URL error catching. * Fixed invalid bootstraping with easy_install installation. Thanks to Florian Shchulze for the help * Removed buildout/bootstrap.py. A new repository at bitbucket.org will create a specific bootstrap.py script. * The bootstrap process leave setuptools alone if detected in the system and --root, --user or --prefix is provided, but is not in the same location. The next release of the 0.6 series will try to adress all remaining bugs in the tracker, The first 0.7 release is still under heavy work. Cheers Tarek -- Tarek Ziadé | http://ziade.org | オープンソースの岩!

I mean False of course ;)
But wait, "zip_ok" is a flag on a package which tells whether this package has something in it that breaks when loaded from a .zip file. My proposal in http://bugs.python.org/setuptools/issue33 was *not* to make zip_ok default to False, but instead to make always_unzip default to True! always_unzip is a flag in your system which tells whether you want to unzip packages when installing them. I guess I don't precisely *object* to setting zip_ok to default False, at least for now, but I prefer setting always_unzip to default to True. Some people might like to configure their local system to install packages zipped unless that package says that it won't work that way. Regards, Zooko

Excellent!
I've found one issue: distribute_setup.py uses 2.6's site.USER_SITE.
Right, I'll fix it right away and this can be applied in the distribute_setup.py that is available online (so virtualenv-distribute can be fixed as well) Tarek

Done, Thx It's time to add a test for a minimal coverage of all supported py versions to avoid this problem again http://bitbucket.org/tarek/distribute/issue/42

Is there some summary of advantages of distribute compared to setuptools?

For 0.6.x series, the only advantage is that we are fixing all the bugs that were added in setuptools issue tracker since a year or so (plus some other fixes and enhancement) * See: http://bitbucket.org/tarek/distribute/wiki/bug_listing * and the changeset file since 0.6.1 For the upcoming 0.7.x series: * py3k support (maybe this will be also added in 0.6.3) * splitting of the code in smaller logical distributions. The changelog entries as found at http://pypi.python.org/pypi/distribute#changes should be a good start. The Distribute 0.6 series is essentially setuptools with more bugs fixed. One process related advantage distribute has over setuptools is, that you can actually contribute patches and code to the project and get those released after a reasonable time. We welcome contributors to the project :-) Hanno
