History of python packaging
Hello! My name is Konstantin and I am going to participate in the PyPA event [1] next week. To understand the packaging landscape better, I've decided to create an article for myself generally, but I think it could be interesting for others as well because I've found that https://www.pypa.io/en/latest/history/ is not enough for me to understand how packaging works in general. If anyone has an interest, I would really appreciate any comments on it, either technical or just stylistic. https://medium.com/@knikitin/the-brief-history-of-package-distribution-in-py... , before I will publish it for a wider audience. Thank you! [1] https://generalassemb.ly/education/bloomberg-open-source-weekend-pypa/london...
Hi Konstantin, You might find my PyCon talk "How Python Packaging Works" useful for a general timeline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQsZsgJ30AE The section "How did we get here" from Nick Coghlan's essay on a core packaging API is quite a bit more detailed: http://python-notes.curiousefficiency.org/en/latest/pep_ideas/core_packaging... Significant parts of the implementation of setuptools were funded by the Open Source Applications Foundation, to provide a plug-in infrastructure for the Chandler PIM application.
