Hi I sent you an e-mail before without so much formalism and from my personal (to play with friends) account. This is my formal account now let's talk about this. Firstly I'm a student from FEC-LUZ university, and you can see it's true because of my institutional e-mail; I've had studies on English language but my first one is spanish. At the moment I'm into economic trouble, I've been seeking for a job but I don't seem to find any as I've just become 18, I'm also studying chemistry (I use python to model atoms and orbitals and do calculus). So I wondered what about working for python as a contributing to it? I would be a really bad developer as I'm just a newbie on it and I just use it for hobbie. However I have enough free time like to do an entire translation of the documentation, that time is supposed to be the time for me to work. So I was wondering if there's a way to get "donations" for me as I really want to help with the documentation and I'm poor, I know it's very personal what I'm asking for but I needed to ask. I have very good skills at writing (as my mum was a secretary), and I'm sure I'm able to get into this project of translating it into spanish. I just would like that, at least some economic help for my studies, food and medical insurance; not really much I do ask for, at least to post something telling people to give me some help and in exchange I'll keep doing translations of the python documentation. documentation for 2.7.3 __repr__ and __str__

Hello, my name is Richard and I first want to compliment for the great thing of python and of course it's documentation. I found an issue I would like to discuss in the description of the __repr__ attribute. It says there about __repr__: "Called by the repr() built-in function ..." And further: "If at all possible, this should look like a valid Python expression that could be used to recreate an object with the same value (given an appropriate environment). If this is not possible, a string of the form <...some useful description...> should be returned." And about __str__ it says: "... by the print statement to compute the informal string representation of an object. This differs from __repr__() in that it does not have to be a valid Python expression: a more convenient or concise representation may be used instead." At another place I read that __str__ is supposed to be human readable and that python falls back to __repr__ if there is no __str__ defined. Lets say we have a Color class which holds the name of the color and it's RGB values, than I would interpret this as have the attributes return something like the following: __repr__: "{'name':'red', 'red':255, 'green':0, 'blue':0}" __str__: "Color: red [255, 0, 0]" The first would be readable by a python program and convert to an instance of the Color class and the latter is information rich, compact and alot better human readable. This is supported by the real purpose of the repr() function which is meant to serialize data for persistent storage or to transmit across a wire. In practice it is alot worse, many classes follow the documentation and have their __repr__ produce something like <xyz object at 0x94738237> which is in no way human readable and information rich. If this is "some useful description" at all, like the documentation asks for, I would deny. But the documentation suggests for __repr__: "This is typically used for debugging..." Which is wrong from my point of view. Especially, since I found out, that __repr__ is also, at least sometimes, used in comparison of objects. Conclusion: I would like to suggest to move the line that starts with: "This is typically used for debugging ...", to the __str__ attribute, suggesting to developers of debugging tools do dispay information rich, compact and human readable information to humans and leave __repr__ for machine to machine communication. urllib2.urlopen()

Hi, I just tried to directly open a tar file from an URL: ---------------------8<------------------------------- import urllib2 import tarfile url = "http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/hello/hello-2.8.tar.gz" tar = tarfile.open(fileobj = urllib2.urlopen(url)) tar.extractall() ---------------------8<------------------------------- This doesn't work since urllib2.urlopen() does not return a seekable file, but tarfile.open() expects one. This limitation is not mentioned in the documentation of urlopen(), instead is misleadingly states: "This function returns a file-like object with two additional methods: [...]" I would suggest to add here that the returned object is not seekable, or a "Socket-like" object or similar. Oh, and the object has *three* additional methods, not two (geturl(), info(), getcode()). Please include me in an replay as I am not subscribed to the list. Best regards Ole

Serhiy Storchaka added the comment: Escaping for glob on Windows should not be such trivial. Special characters in the drive part have no special meaning and should not be escaped. I.e. ``escape('//?/c:/Quo vadis?.txt')`` should return ``'//?/c:/Quo vadis[?].txt'``. Perhaps we should move the escape function to the glob module (because it is glob's peculiarity). [issue17370] PEP should not if it has been superseded

New submission from Brandon Craig Rhodes: A friend (@theomn on Twitter) was just working off of PEP-333 when I mentioned to him that PEP-3333, and he had never heard of it, and he expressed the wish that PEPs would have a banner or something at the top if there is a more recent version of them. I think his idea is great, and is like the feature of PyPI where if Google lands you on an old version of a package then it is careful to tell you up at the top that a more recent version is available. This could extend to all sorts of cross-references that we should maintain: some PEPs have been superseded; others have more recent supplements that people should read as well (think of the relationship between packaging PEPs); PEPs that did not wind up being implemented have cousins who were; and so forth. Is this something that needs to wait until the New Python Web Site appears, and that would be meta-markup somehow maintained along with the PEP texts themselves? Or should there be a “Related PEPs” paragraph that we open at the top of each relevant PEP and just include the cross-links as raw updates to the PEP's own restructured text?
