New submission from Thayne McCombs: The subprocess documentation for stdout/stderr/stdin states: "Valid values are PIPE, an existing file descriptor (a positive integer), an existing file object, and None. PIPE indicates that a new pipe to the child should be created." However, file-like objects such as StringIO are not valid if they do not implement fileno(). Nick Coghlan <ncoghlan(a)gmail.com> added the comment: The recommended handling in the article that Serhiy mentions is to strip the leading zeroes, which the ipaddress module will still do - it's only being made more tolerant on input. That means it will become usable as a prefilter step (pass string with potentially leading zeroes to ipaddress, get string with no leading zeroes out).
