[issue41521] Replace whitelist/blacklist with allowlist/denylist
by STINNER Victor Aug. 16, 2020

Aug. 16, 2020

New submission from STINNER Victor <vstinner(a)python.org>: I propose to replace whitelist/blacklist with allowlist/denylist. The terms whitelist and blacklist can be associated to color skins which isn't the intent. To avoid confusion, I propose to use neutral terms: allowlist and denylist. Moreover, as a french person (english is not my first language, but french), "allow" and "deny" are even more explicit to me than "white "and "black". The intent is to make the Python community more welcoming and more diverse by avoiding to make some people uncomfortable. Many other projects already replaced whitelist/blacklist with allowlist/denylist: * GitLab: https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/7554 * React: https://github.com/facebook/react/commit/8a8d973d3cc5623676a84f87af66ef9259… * Mediawiki: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T254646 * GitHub: https://thenextweb.com/dd/2020/06/15/github-plans-to-replace-racially-insen… * Google Chrome: https://9to5google.com/2020/06/12/google-android-chrome-blacklist-blocklist… * etc. See also: * Carolyn Stransky's "Humanizing Your Documentation" presentation: https://speakerdeck.com/carolstran/humanizing-your-documentation-full-talk * bpo-34605: "Avoid master/slave terminology" Attached PRs replace whitelist/blacklist with allowlist/denylist. ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation, Library (Lib) messages: 375170 nosy: docs@python, vstinner priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: Replace whitelist/blacklist with allowlist/denylist versions: Python 3.10 _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41521> _______________________________________

[issue13322] The io module doesn't support non-blocking files
by Bar Harel Aug. 16, 2020

Aug. 16, 2020

Bar Harel <bzvi7919(a)gmail.com> added the comment: I have experienced both ״TypeError: can't concat NoneType to bytes״, and the fact BufferedIO returns None. @pitrou @izbyshev contrary to your belief, I think there is at least some interest in this issue. Every few months another ticket is opened about a different aspect of the same underlying problem. ---------- nosy: +bar.harel _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue13322> _______________________________________

[issue41205] Documentation Decimal power 0 to the 0 is Nan (versus 0 to the 0 which is 1)
by JD-Veiga Aug. 15, 2020

Aug. 15, 2020

New submission from JD-Veiga <jdveiga(a)gmail.com>: Hi, I would like to propose a minor addition to `decimal` package documentation page (https://docs.python.org/3/library/decimal.html). I think that we should add a paragraph in `context.power(x, y, modulo=None)` stating that `Decimal(0) ** Decimal(0)` returns `Decimal('NaN')` instead of `1` --as `0 ** 0` does-- or `1.0` --in case of `0.0 ** 0.0`. Indeed, `0 ** 0` is `NaN` is mentioned as example of operations raising `InvalidOperation` exceptions. However, I think that this is not enough to indicate the different behaviour of decimal versus int and float numbers. Moreover, in the case of `%` and `//` operators, there are clear remarks on these differences (See: “There are some small differences between arithmetic on Decimal objects and arithmetic on integers and floats [...]” in the page). Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience. ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation messages: 372969 nosy: JD-Veiga, docs@python priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: Documentation Decimal power 0 to the 0 is Nan (versus 0 to the 0 which is 1) type: enhancement versions: Python 3.10, Python 3.8, Python 3.9 _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41205> _______________________________________

[issue35786] get_lock() method is not present for Values created using multiprocessing.Manager()
by Lorenzo Persichetti Aug. 14, 2020

Aug. 14, 2020

New submission from Lorenzo Persichetti <lpersichetti(a)gmail.com>: According to the documentation of the multiprocessing.Value() class available here https://docs.python.org/3.6/library/multiprocessing.html#multiprocessing.Va… Operations like += which involve a read and write are not atomic. So if, for instance, you want to atomically increment a shared value it is insufficient to just do counter.value += 1 Assuming the associated lock is recursive (which it is by default) you can instead do with counter.get_lock(): counter.value += 1 What happens is that when running the following snippet import multiprocessing manager = multiprocessing.Manager() value = manager.Value('i', 0) value.get_lock() the result is AttributeError: 'ValueProxy' object has no attribute 'get_lock' ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation, Library (Lib), Windows messages: 334070 nosy: Lorenzo Persichetti, docs@python, paul.moore, steve.dower, tim.golden, zach.ware priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: get_lock() method is not present for Values created using multiprocessing.Manager() versions: Python 3.6 _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue35786> _______________________________________

[issue41510] Mentions of pdb.set_trace() in library/functions and library/sys uncorrectly states that set_trace expects no arguments

New submission from Maciej Olko <maciej.olko(a)gmail.com>: An argument was added to pdb.set_trace() in Python 3.7 and those fragments of documentation should have been updated: library/functions.rst:120 > By default, sys.breakpointhook() calls pdb.set_trace() expecting no arguments. library/sys.rst > For example, the default binding (e.g. pdb.set_trace()) expects no arguments, but you might bind it to a function that expects additional arguments (positional and/or keyword). ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation messages: 375064 nosy: Maciej Olko, docs@python priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: Mentions of pdb.set_trace() in library/functions and library/sys uncorrectly states that set_trace expects no arguments versions: Python 3.10, Python 3.7, Python 3.8, Python 3.9 _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41510> _______________________________________

[issue41410] Opening a file in binary mode makes a difference on all platforms in Python 3
by Bob Kline Aug. 13, 2020

Aug. 13, 2020
