[issue41507] Use utf-8 in "Reading and Writing Files" tutorial.
by Inada Naoki Aug. 7, 2020

Aug. 7, 2020

New submission from Inada Naoki <songofacandy(a)gmail.com>: https://docs.python.org/3/tutorial/inputoutput.html#reading-and-writing-fil… Current tutorial doesn't mention about encoding and example uses locale encoding. Since UTF-8 is major text encoding and many Windows environment doesn't use UTF-8 by default, encoding should be mentioned in the tutorial and UTF-8 should be recommended. Additionally, the paragraph about line ending conversion [1] can be removed. This was important in Python 2. But it is not important because (en|de)coding binary data is nonsense already. [1]: "This behind-the-scenes modification to file data is fine for text files, but will corrupt binary data like that in JPEG or EXE files. Be very careful to use binary mode when reading and writing such files." ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation keywords: newcomer friendly messages: 375033 nosy: docs@python, inada.naoki priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: Use utf-8 in "Reading and Writing Files" tutorial. type: enhancement versions: Python 3.10, Python 3.8, Python 3.9 _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41507> _______________________________________

[issue41460] Translation Error in in Functional Programming HOWTO page
by Terry J. Reedy Aug. 7, 2020

Aug. 7, 2020

Terry J. Reedy <tjreedy(a)udel.edu> added the comment: This tracker is only for the original English version of the docs. The translations are by a different group with different tools and workflow. This page https://docs.python.org/ja/3/bugs.html# should not literally translate the instructions for the English version. Julien, I thought there was something about translations in the devguide but cannot find it. https://devguide.python.org/docquality/ would seen line a good place. ---------- nosy: +terry.reedy resolution: -> third party stage: -> resolved status: open -> closed _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41460> _______________________________________

Can't save python files
by REED mcbrayer Aug. 5, 2020

Aug. 5, 2020

Hello, I am trying to learn python and I am running into issues with saving files. I am following a guide and am making a super simple test game, and when I click save as the file will not go into the folder it is selected for. NOTE: This is when editing files with IDLE, not sure if it would act the same on a fresh file. So, I can't use the run fuction on IDLE to test the game and verify it works. Thanks, Reed McBrayer

[issue41259] Find adverbs is not correct
by Rim Chatti Aug. 4, 2020

Aug. 4, 2020

New submission from Rim Chatti <chattiriim(a)gmail.com>: re.findall(r"\w+ly", text) does not find all adverbs in a sentence, it finds words that contain ly (not ending with ly) : if text= 'andlying clearly', output: [andly, clearly] which is wrong! the right way to do this is re.findall(r'\b(\w+ly)\b',text) output= clearly! ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation messages: 373406 nosy: Rim Chatti, docs@python priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: Find adverbs is not correct versions: Python 3.5 _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41259> _______________________________________

[issue41449] An article on Python 3 stdout and stderr output buffering
by Anatoli Babenia Aug. 3, 2020

Aug. 3, 2020

New submission from Anatoli Babenia <anatoli(a)rainforce.org>: It is hard to find info why Python 3 buffers stdout/stderr. The buffering causes problems when debugging Python apps in Docker and Kubernetes, and it is unclear if it is Python 3 who starts to buffer stdout if no tty is attached, it is Docker, or it is Kubernetes. The only bit of info that could be searched is the description of -u option https://docs.python.org/3.8/using/cmdline.html?#cmdoption-u which is not linked to any article. The `-u` description also says. > Changed in version 3.7: The text layer of the stdout and stderr streams now is unbuffered. However, I don't understand what is the text layers of stdout. And there is no description of behaviour when the output is not attached, and when the output is redirected. ---------- assignee: docs@python components: Documentation messages: 374633 nosy: Anatoli Babenia, docs@python priority: normal severity: normal status: open title: An article on Python 3 stdout and stderr output buffering _______________________________________ Python tracker <report(a)bugs.python.org> <https://bugs.python.org/issue41449> _______________________________________
