Proposal - Panel discussion for the Web Track of Pycon

All, I'd like to propose a panel discussion topic for the web track of this year's Pycon. I'm volunteering myself to help run the panel if this is a topic we think is worthy. I think it's good to have a topic that has a heathy debate. Such topics are engaging for the audience, and also bring forth a number of useful takeaways. Topic: Flask vs Django vs Bottle vs Pyramid vs YAPWF The specific frameworks we choose will depend a bit on the panelists, their expertise and how relevant the comparisons may be. I will likely have each panelist choose a framework that they will be a bit vocal about, in order to keep the discussion engaging. How does this sound? Should we do it? Screening of "The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz" during PyCon India 2014

Hi friends, This is Vignesh Prabhu and I am a volunteer at Free Software Movement Karnataka(FSMK). FSMK recently conducted a 9 days Summer Camp on Free Software Technologies which was participated by 183 participants and 30 volunteers. As part of the camp, we had a screening of the movie, The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz followed by a discussion with Lawrence Liang from Alternative Law Forum. The screening was received very well by participants and there were quite a good number of questions and opinions from participants. The movie is very well made to make the general public understand the whole circumstances which lead Aaron to commit suicide. I was wondering if there is any chance for PyCon India 2014 to make a similar screening for its participants/general public whichever it seems fit and possible in the evening on the day of conference. Apart from Aaron's connection to Python through many projects, web.py being one of the popular ones, I think one of the main reason why PyCon India needs to do the screening is that it is one of the premier conference which brings in good mix of people from various interests and backgrounds to Bangalore and hence very good place to inform people about the story of Aaron Swartz. Currently I dont think there is any other conference like PyCon India which is organized in Bangalore which would be suitable for such screening, especially since FOSS.IN is no longer being organized. Another reason is that it would be very difficult for anyone to organize similar screening in as good venue as Nimhans Convention Hall which has a very good seating capacity and can accommodate large crowd. Hope the community will consider the request and will make it possible so that ideas of Aaron Swartz and his story reaches and inspires many more people. Open spaces & Lightning Talks

Hi All, I was watching talks from 2014 Pycon and there is a lightning talk[1] where Greg of the aosabook fame talks about how they want people to come together in an open space and work on something. I feel that we should make way from great discussions like those. Last year, I do remember that we had open spaces but they were tucked away in some corner of the place and it didn't attract too much attention (correct me if I am wrong) What I feel is this time, we should bring more (way more) focus to Open spaces and Lighting Talks. More affordable accommodation during the event

Hi all, I think we have an exciting news. We've been hearing a lot from the participants who are coming from different cities across the country, on how it'd help them a lot if they could find help with accommodations during the event. So, we've been talking to Airbnb and they have agreed to partner with us to provide the outstation attendees with a significant amount of discount(about Rs 1500)! Airbnb has about 455 spaces listed in Bangalore. So you have a LOT of options/locations to choose from. If you're attending PyCon and stay in Bangalore, you can also list your space on Airbnb and help the fellow Pythonistas stay during the event and also make some friends. What do you think? PythonMonth planning

Hi , I think we need to kick start PythonMonth work . I propose tentative date from August 18- Sept 18th(we have one long weekend in between August 29th) We need to find few active volunteer for different region to follow up with college and Tutor. We need to start scheduling date now so we can cover as much as we can. We need to decide what all topic we will be cover (will it be same as last year). -- Thanks, Vijay

On using QR codes for sponsor-participant contact exchange.

Ladies and gentlemen, During the last offline volunteers meetup, we discussed about alternatives that we could use for contact exchange between the sponsors and participants. We had using Bar code readers in mind. Sayan and I took it up. In between research, Praseetha suggested using QR codes for this purpose. We investigated on that end and here are the observations. Create QR codes for each registered participant before hand using this API http://goqr.me/api/. Put them sorted alphabetically and hand it over to the participants during registration. Printing it during registration is a no-no. Tons of things that could go wrong. Have a tablet (labelled with sponsor name) at every sponsor stall with QR code app installed. The app is called QR Droid. It scans and stores the information within a database. The sponsor can see the history at any time they choose to. After the event, the app allows you to export the data as a CSV. We'll have to write a CSV parser to parse the data and send it to the respective sponsors. The API allows 10k requests per day. So we're good there. This approach will have the side effect of participants being able to exchange contact info. Guess that is good side effect to have. This approach requires neither a centralized server nor an Internet connection. The Internet is usually the main problem in these scenarios. Hence, we avoid that. Sayan tested the API and the app. It seems to be working as expected. We would like to hear your thoughts. With the exception of Murphy hanging around PyCon India as an uninvited guest, unless there is something that could obviously go wrong with this approach, it seems reasonable to implement. Oh, as for the Bar code reader, bar codes can only store numbers. Then we again hit the problem of having a centralized server where we can look up the details of the corresponding number. Free conference pass for student

Hi, There were few request last year and this year we got request to provide free pass for conference. I was think if we can make form available online where student can fill and get free pass for conference.(max of 10 tickets) Preference of the free pass will be for out station student as they need to plan transportation and accommodation cost. Even I agree with this point. Making some arrangements for accommodation would help many students a lot!
