Hello Folks, I could not attend Pycon-IN this year but did check out the videos on Youtube and didnt find too many of them for 2012 - was there a different tag or are they being hosted elsewhere? Fwiw, I was talking to Carl Karsten, the unofficially official A/V master for all things PyCon. So far, has done videos for: PyCon DE 2012, and 11, DjangoCon 2009,10,11, PyOhio 2009,10,11 , SciPy 2012, PyCon US 2012 and, 08, 09,10,11, PyGotham 2011, PyTexas 2011 and I was blown away by the recording quality. I would like to see Pycon-India talks have the same quality that you see listed on http://pyvideo.org/, so I asked if he would be interested in visiting India and helping us out in 2013 and he is interested, but here are some things we need to consider: 1. Travel costs - Chicago to Bangalore (Can someone confirm if Pycon-IN 2013 will be held in BLR?) flight cost for him and his colleague. 2. He needs volunteers to work with him during the conference (which is how he keeps costs down). Many of the videos had been recorded by the setup Jace had. He has been uploading them on Youtube I guess. Carl, Thanks for the fabulous job for the Pycon videos. I could not attend US Pycon and the video quality was fantastic. Too early to say whether I can volunteer but if I am around I surely will. I am one of the person who operated camera for Pycon India 2012 and processed 2 set of videos(out of 3) and uploaded few of the videos. I have processed 2/3 sets o video. So far video size is few hundred GB.
Why hasn't this been uploaded ? I work at HasGeek and we helped in shooting Pycon video. After processing these video, I have no bandwidth in company to upload the video since we are working on our JsFoo & DroidCon video. I would love to upload all these videos from my home internet unfortunately I use Reliance Netconnect with 10GB cap, so I have no option to upload video. Apart from this first timers who handle the equipments will face a lot of difficulties. It needs quite a lot of training. So volunteers need to trained up front.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think the crucial difference lies in the equipment being used as I spoke to a volunteer on Carl's team, who mentioned they did live editing - saw some of the equipment and from Carl's site, http://nextdayvideo.com/, Editing takes place as the talk is going on. This means the editor is in the room, watching the talk and everything going on. This gives them an advantage over someone who only has the raw footage to work with. Once the talk is over, a significant amount of work has already been completed. The post production is not labor intensive. We make sure the video starts and ends at the right place, maybe remove large blocks of dead air. The titling, encoding and upload is done with automated workflow software we wrote. Not really outsourced like the past few years. HasGeek helped us since the founder is a Pythonista and an active volunteer. The fact that their business is conferences is a happy coincidence. [...]

I'm sure we'd benefit from Carl's experience. However, It is expensive to fly someone in and back though so it highly depends on the the budget. This IS nitpicking.
And, I did not find anything in Noufal's tone that conveyed whatever Vid is claiming. A (valid, good) suggestion was made, and Noufal explained why it was difficult to do what was suggested. I don't see anything wrong at all. And moreover, we are still discussing stuff. Noufal did not say "No, we are not doing that", what he said was that it depends on the budget, and that it increases our costs and that argument is certainly valid. I don't see anything is wrong with what Noufal said. We had Kiran and Krace helping us with video recording. Kiran is very experienced editor. We too could have got HasGeek quality video if we had volunteers to process the videos. I'm not underestimating the experience of Carl, but one of the big issues for us is lack of volunteers. Even now, if someone is ready to help, we can process the videos to remove noise and insert slides. Anyone interested? Anand

I'm not underestimating the experience of Carl, but one of the big issues for us is lack of volunteers.

Making a late addition to this thread: we launched HasGeek TV at FOSS.INlast week: http://hasgeek.tv It's a place to watch videos and slides side-by-side, and it's not limited to HasGeek events. We helped FOSS.IN produce video, and PyCon videos can go up there too. HasGeek TV is our humble attempt to make high quality technical content available to a wider audience free of charge. With HasGeek TV, we are producing videos at HasGeek events (which is how HGTV is funded), training volunteers on how to do it themselves, and loaning our time and equipment to events we are personally interested in.
