Re: [Inpycon] Social media plugins (for the website)
I've CC'ed the list. Gora Mohanty <gora@mimirtech.com> writes: [...]
Hi,
Have added demos for four types of social plugins from Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus at the top of the staging site at http://46.137.249.216/pyconindia2013/
Some comments: A: Twitter -------------- 1. The widget shows all tweets from @pyconindia (I could not find a hashtag for #pyconindia) 2. It includes a feature for tweeting to @pycondia. Have not tested it, and maybe one of you could do that with a real Tweet.
B: Facebook ------------------- Multiple FB social plugins are listed under https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/ Of these, I see the following as suitable for Pycon India 2013: 1. The Like Box (top row, right): https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like-box/ This combines many FB features, including posts on the FB brand page, facepile of users, and a Like button. 2. One could consider a FB Comments plugin that allows users to interact: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/comments/ This might be placed somewhere other than on the homepage. Please be careful while testing: A comment will appear on the FB Pycon India page. 3. One could also use the stand-alone FB Like button https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/ E.g., this, a Tweet button, and the Google+ share button could be combined in a short row for social sharing.
C: Google+ ----------------- 1. Just a simple share button.
D. Misc. ------------ 1. All of these are made with my personal accounts for Twitter, and Facebook. I do not think that there is an issue with that, and this fact should not be visible to the end user. However, it probably makes more sense to use official Pycon India accounts. In this case, you would either need to set up a Twitter widget and a FB app (I can help with these), or allow me access to the accounts. 2. Styling, and placement will probably need to change, and we need to finalise which plugins to use.
Regards, Gora

OK, keeping the discussion on the list. I have tweaked the social media sharing aspect a bit, and you can check it out at the staging server at http://46.137.249.216/pyconindia2013/ . Have checked in Firefox and Chrome, and would appreciate it if someone could look for broken styling with Internet Explorer. 1. Made a "share bar" of FB/Twitter/Google+ buttons just below the tagline at the top. Most of the functionality here is already included in the other plugins, but this is a more compact, and convenient point for people to share. Anand, please let me know if you do not want the share bar, and I can revert the changes. 2. Repositioned some of the other social media plugins at the bottom of the page. Regards, Gora

Forgot to mention: If you are testing, please remember that the share buttons are live, i.e., Tweets, FB/Google+ shares will go out. You might want to cancel at the last point, or share something meaningful. Regards, Gora
