Questions for "python in education" panel
Hello everyone, I emailed about this earlier. We're doing a panel discussion on education at PyCon India. I'm still getting the folks together but there will be 4 or 5 people at the panel. My plan is to pose a few questions we select up front to guide the talk in general and open it up to the panel towards the end of the discussion. So, I'll need folks on the list to suggest questions which are interesting[1] and I'll pick a around 7 or 8 (5 minutes for each question). Please reply to the thread with "interesting" questions. Thanks. Footnotes: [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QI -- Cordially, Noufal http://nibrahim.net.in
Hi Noufal, I had one question. There are pilot workshops that are run colleges only during the Python month or or an event close to that. How about attracting talent other than engineers, say for example, arts and commerce graduates towards Python programming. I am not sure if this question qualifies as interesting, but just my thoughts Warm regards, Anu On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 11:37 AM, Noufal Ibrahim <noufal@nibrahim.net.in>wrote:

The question has a lot of merit. In India, the technical field (IT, software development) is very much the area for people who have done their graduation in Engineering or related (M.C.A/B.C.A) degrees. However this is not so in the west where the field attracts people from multiple disciplines and aptitude is what that counts. Python being such an easy language to learn and develop in, kind of levels the playing field and makes it easy for anyone to code. It would be good to discuss this in the education panel.
Warm regards, Anu

Hello, It seems a there's a fair amount of activity in trying to engage college students (though a certain demographic, as the previous poster pointed out). Are there similar activities for younger school students? On the other side of the spectrum, are there efforts to support educators who can potentially mentor their students as they explore and learn about Python? For both these questions, I'm interested in knowing what has been the response like. If such efforts do not exist, what are the barriers? Thanks, Sayamindu On Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 2:07 AM, Noufal Ibrahim <noufal@nibrahim.net.in> wrote:

Hey Noufal: Few topics to pick for discussion - What are the barriers for CBSE/others affiliated schools for teaching Python? Are enough teachers available to teach the same as part of Curriculum now ? - Educating/Training teachers/faculty is more important as to establish the base & motivating them. - Should Curriculum focus on teaching fundamentals of programming & its application rather than much on python? - Python as a language to learn the basics of programming for the student not wanting to program for a career! - Why Python doesn't' restrict a beginner to extend and implement his learning to broader set of applications. - How teaching Python can help attract those students who ran away from programming ? - Why C/C++ or similar languages is not the FIRST language to start learning programming ! or the other way ..? - Ease of "Web Development using Python" and the available resources for getting started..? - Future of Python in education? - What is the feedback of STUDENTS from other Countries where Python is part of Curriculum ? - No particular language should be enforced, should Open to all languages and Choice depends on Students ? - How Community is helping through Python workshops to teach and train students and Teachers / faculty ..? - Using Raspberry Pi and Python and other such similar stuff can excite students and build interest ! - Open Source and Python bonding is helpful as a echo system to be IN !! - Education in INDIA is different from other countries and implication of introduction of Python in INDIA is helpful ? - Teaching Python to Students with Visual Impairments (Blindness/Low Vision) : Ease? - Examples in INDIA and the Pythonists who are the SUCCESS stories - What are the Challenges / how to Convince Schools the importance to teach Kids to Code? and In Python? - Why Complicate things ? Thanks! ~/Piyush On Fri, Aug 16, 2013 at 11:13 AM, Noufal Ibrahim <noufal@nibrahim.net.in>wrote:

People like Anand, Kushal and others who have written(writing) books in python can review the materials for teachers and students if they are interested. Will PSSI be interested in taking steps and also does CBSE schools need any help from the community ? Since most of the teachers are learning/teaching python for first time. Does PSSI have any idea to run workshop like PyMonth if requested ? What are the challenges involved in teaching programming in general to school kids ? How can the we help? How can the Python community get involved in improving the Python adoption in education and improving education in general. What are the difficulties in using Python in education. Is there anything that we can do to solve them? Anand
As someone trying to get women to learn Python, I would like to ask these questions. 1. How do we increase women participation in Python community. In technology areas in general? 2. There is a lot of women workforce that takes a break due to various reasons namely children, family, etc. How can we welcome these very well technically qualified women to return to jobs? Python is a relatively easy language to learn, that should reduce entry barrier for learning Python. Anything else that we can encourage to welcome these women to jobs. Remote setups?, work from home options? etc. 3. Are there incentivized learning activities , not for women alone, but for everyone. Incentives could be anything. A certificate of learning, etc. Warm regards, Annapoornima On Fri, Aug 16, 2013 at 2:32 PM, Anand Chitipothu <anandology@gmail.com>wrote:
