Well, there's XPath and CSSSelect in lxml, and modifying XML isn't that hard either. But there's always space left for improvements, especially for special use cases.

Missing a jquery like API in python, I started reproducing the jquery API in python by using lxml and released it a few days ago : pyquery<http://pypi.python.org/pypi/pyquery>
