Premise: I haven't tried your suggestion of using <mm-email-user>, I have tried the patch above and it works. If the issue is about confusion as you mention, then if should be documented. This bug prevents people to link to mailinglist archives of mailman, to run their own fora. I think this is important enough to move forward towards any proposed solution that works, rather than a stalled debate lasting more than one year. I don't see any documentation for this, but reading the code of mailman at least this variable becomes self explanatory.
