[Bug 818531] [NEW] A7 needs postfix - dependency not checked

Public bug reported: for further improvements I'd suggest checking for postfix as dependecy during installation I had issues running mailman without an the isntalled postfix package on a 11.04 ubuntu desktop installation ** Affects: mailman Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/818531 Title: A7 needs postfix - dependency not checked To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/818531/+subscriptions

Wouldn't this be an operating system packaging issue? ** Tags added: mailman3 ** Changed in: mailman Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/818531 Title: A7 needs postfix - dependency not checked To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/818531/+subscriptions

sure you could implement this into the e.g. DEB package - but i encountered this using the tar.gz downloaded from Launchpad. If there is an easy way checking the availability of postfix - e.g. getting a Python import error - it might be helpful to check it in the original installer as well. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/818531 Title: A7 needs postfix - dependency not checked To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/818531/+subscriptions

I don't think there's anything you can import to tell you if Postfix is installed. Plus, from an upstream's point of view, Mailman should be MTA agnostic, so e.g. a OS package would have to depend on a virtual-mta package which could be satisfied by Postfix, Exim, qmail, Sendmail, etc. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/818531 Title: A7 needs postfix - dependency not checked To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/818531/+subscriptions

well anyway thanks for pointing that out - i've ammended a short phrase to the installation guide which i posted in the wiki ** Changed in: mailman Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Mailman Coders, which is subscribed to GNU Mailman. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/818531 Title: A7 needs postfix - dependency not checked To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/818531/+subscriptions
